Sudden judder or momentary freeze

Not sure if this is something that's recently started happening due to a game update or it's on my end.

I'm getting random and very quickly over game freezes and the odd micro-stutter. Not present before Ascendancy but then I've also installed a new anti-virus (Avast free version) so it could be that.

Which is more likely? Or could it be something else entirely?

Thanks

Just for additional info, it might be worth turning on the bandwidth monitor (CTRL+B) to see if the stutters are happening when the game communicates with the servers. A lot of my micro-stutters happen at times when the network is being used. I haven't found any way to stop it, unfortunately.

dunno but i do know what i would try uninstalling first
also be aware of any os system updates since decendancy dropped;)
a cmdr has said his usb was constantly polling after using a usb analysis tool causing a stutter and had to swap that about and try a different lead to fix it

Interesting! Thanks!

Loads of reports of this, and quite a lot of low-grade evidence it is when it's talking to the servers yep. (Which would also explain why it has appeared with Ascension along with all these other problems which have evidence there's now too much traffic / too reliant on the server answering)

There's enough different low-grade evidence around I think the sheer volume of it makes it high-grade evidence!

This is an issue since Powerplay 2.0 update. Ibhave the same thing, it happens intermittently and without and visible pattern.

In my experience it looks like a server side issue.

It is a server issue.. It happens every 15 min past every hour on my side anyway.. :)
That could be on your network though - I recall seeing a thread before Ascendancy talking abaut how a Smart TV caused stuttering in-game. No idea why or how that worked, though.

With that said, the fact that it is a widespread issue (I get it too) implies either server issues or a clientside bug, perhaps a combination fo the two.

I'm (slowly) making a list (on GitHub) of the issues we commonly talk about on here, so I can just point people to the existing thread and issue super-quick.

I haven't tackled stutters / judders / freeze / jank yet because there are multiple reasons for it so compiling the info is not only slicing fog, but the fog is toxic methane fog and it keeps freezing into a puddle on the surface of the icy moon and then just when I think I'm following the thread, it evaporates again right in my face.

Since the devs are probably suffering the same problem... I wonder if would be worth raising a new one about this exact kind of judder, describing what we think the common factors are to identify this exact kind and include some wording to say we're trying to track that one specifically so don't please all pile on with your half-second pause once a fortnight which was there before Ascendancy anyway, because that one's your PC and it ain't the one we're talking about here.

Edit to add: It's obvious FDev have been doing some tidying up on the Issues site, a load of duplicates officially marked as dupes, etc, so that's a good sign!

Sounds like a good idea. The tracker really needs a tracker.

That won't help. The primary issue with their tracker is the useless search. That causes duplicates, making the entire tracker a high-maintenance mess.

I don't intend to derail the thread and I hope you get the answer to your main question, but I'd just like to say that Microsoft's Defender is top of the range, especially in professional environments. I am not affiliated with Microsoft but I'm a very happy professional user. Their bad past is... behind them.

I've been logging the events, and they are definitely random. Looks like a data transfer server side. Even had a few in witchspace. I've checked my server logs, and nothing sticks out. Also nothing in Windows event viewer such as desktop performance issues (I get those with DCS World if I run out of Vram.) They last about 5 seconds, then a few seconds later a very brief stutter as though something is syncing up with the servers. HTH

Turn the tv off dear, I want to play Elite Dangerous.
Not sure that works TBH

Some of us are old enough to have lived in households with one TV and the only way to see Elite on the Beeb was Ch 36 on that TV ... although to be fair, there were only three channels to miss whilst the BBC Micro was plugged into it
First * time I saw a proper computer game was on the tele - Pong. I hated it.

* Well, actually, it's the second computer game - the real first one I ever played was on a teletype hooked up to an acoustic coupler. I think I shared this memory before... anyway, it was "Noughts and Crosses" programmed using BASIC. You programmed in your move, got the coupler working and sent it to the mainframe which was situated a couple of miles away.

The bods at the other end would then program in their move and send it back.

One week later.

It was that fast.

Update. Made a note of the time when the judders happened today. Always just after the hour. So it's definitely some code exchange between the server and client. I think one of the hamsters is poorly. 🤣
