Suffered my first catasrophe

I say catastrophe its probably not that bad compared to some people, but part of venting about it is coming on here. I just came back from the SAR CG in the pleiades while there i did some light exploration got quite a few scans of systems that while have been discovered would have netted me a few pretty pennies.

on the way to my target system i had to use a jet cone boost. nothing like i havnt done lots of times before. But i got a bad feeling about this white dwarf i approaced. the jets seemed very short compared to the exclusion zone. I pottered on regardless ignorant that it would be a problem.

i started getting the boost and jostled around by the turbulance and just as the drive was overcharge. BAM i was flung into the exclusion zone wall that i thought i was far away from.

damage
damage
damage
damage
damage
alarms etc
swearing
shouting

try as i might i could not escape i was just getting thrown about and couldnt escape. Had to self destruct. all that data gone. I'm pretty quietly raging at the minute, partly at myself for being an idiot and partly at the game for being so cruel (i know haha). decided to walk away from it for the rest of the day lest i smash something.

i guess the moral of the story is if you think the jets are too short. dont risk it.

Been there, done that.

My condolences.

Does seem like it's kind of random if you can escape or not.
If you're lucky you might be able to target another system which is in line with the direction you're spinning and then jump out.
If you have time, and keep calm, you can methodically work through all the systems in range to see if there's one in a suitable position.
If there isn't, you're SOL.

indeed sadly my DBX started getting damaged very rapidly and lost all control as soon as the thrusters were gone. Me loosing my temper didnt help but i tried my hardest to steady the ship but to no avail.

lesson learned!

Yes it can be cruel but you're not alone. Eight months out in the void, eight months worth of detailed scans. All gone when Horizons were introduced. I pancaked on the first planet I tried. BOOM!
Personally I don't fight the turbulence, instead I use full throttle and simply wait to be ejected. Not tried a white dwarf though. Don't think I will after your experience. Put it down to experience. Have a rep on me.

I feel your Pain...

I hit a Short White Dwarf last night...
It kicked Me in the Head Twice.
Once on the Initial Drop, Second when I tried to SC Out Through a Jet...

I finally Calmed Down, Pushed Up to SC Away from the Jet, Repaired, then Hit the Jet at a Better Angle to FSD Boost Out...

I think if I got Hung Up in there I'd try to Log befor Pulling the Eject Handle...
Hindsight is 20/20...

Thanks for the sympathy all. yeah i knew as soon as i dropped from SC into the jet i was doomed and it would be unlikely i would escape. i may try it again in a suicidewinder to see if there is a better trick to getting out, so im prepared if it ever happens agains. but hopefully it wont!

I know how you feel. I was about 200ly away from SAG A, took me about 2 months to get there. Decided to land on a planet for the night, and in my tiredness forgot to look at the g's of the planet. Anyway, it was a catastrophic impact which ended in the rebuy screen. Tons of lost data, but I had a brilliant experience and saw some incredible sights which nobody else might not ever see.

So it wasn't a waste in my eyes.

Considering the Boost of a White Dwarf isn't worth the time and the proximity of that Exclusion zone makes it virtually impossible to scoop quite a few of them...

I dunno, I always avoid those. I only used a very few just for kicks; otherwise for me it's either "Neutron or Avoid".

I have 29 rebuys and counting, and no, I don't learn from my previous mistakes as after a bottle of red you start to forget.

Poor soul, got my Conda torn up by one before! Not fun. Hope you can make up for all that lost data sometime!

i'm rooting for ya' here

I suspect the cone-to-zone ratio for a number of these are off a good bit.
I fly with my yellow lines off all the time, but I always turn them on before attempting a cone boost, since a mishap is 99% a death sentence. If it were possible to fight your way out or actually trigger a frame shift without having to stay in the Escape Vector so long, it wouldn't be so bad.

you most likely still had your next system targeted and was trying to high wake out, this requires alignment with target!

Simply using the hotkey (its a default setting) to enter SC will save your bacon very easily as shown in this video

any drop into the cone is survivable with minimal damage if you don't panic and follow the procedure! go practice and never fear them again

Why don't more people know about this?!?!?! escape is possible CMDR o7 very possible!

My condolences. I nearly lost a ship to this a couple of days ago. Neutron star jets just give you a bit of buffeting if you get the right vector, but I swear the white dwarfs actually pull you in. I came so close that the exclusion limit indicator was basically a straight line. Terrifying, and this was just a cheap bubble hopper.

I try to avoid them but the route plotter doesn't distinguish between dwarfs and neutrons. My explorer account is thousands of ly from home and I don't take any chances with that ship. If the plotter takes me to a white dwarf I just manually re-plot the route.

Have a rep on me thanks! i think the multiple alarms canopy exploding etc just started getting the better of me. frustrating to think i couldve saved all that data now but someone might learn from the mistake! I now i know have!
