Suggested new limpet and controller type: Repair Limpets

The existence of Fuel Limpets helped create the Fuel Rats group, and what the Rats do for the game and stuck commanders is a wonderful thing. Perhaps we could use more of that.

Having recently viewed a thread where a commander was thousands of LY from civilized space, had 5% hull, and recalling that repair modules don't repair the hull, I thought: "Too bad the Fuel Rats can't help a guy like that out with some repairs..." How about Repair Limpets?

Other games have used Repair Beams, and that would be a valid way to do it too. Perhaps you could fit the SRV with a repair device, and you can only repair the hull with it while landed. One more thing to do with your SRV.

Perhaps this new mechanic is not meant to get a commander's ship back to 100%, it just adds enough health to make a long journey home safer.

Cheers,
Sgt-Major Malfunction

I think this is a worthwhile idea. Apart from assisting commanders with damaged ships, it could open up another type of mission from bulletin boards.

Repair Limpets could also assist in wings going on long duration exploration or combat missions. A ship could act as a supply and retrofit ship.

As ships become larger and more complex, with the potential for player ship hangars, several large player ships could act as mobile bases.

I approve of this, and in fact made a post or two already about similar functions. Field repairs are a function I think is long overdue for all the reasons mentioned above. It would also open up career paths for those who enjoy being a field mechanic and playing Rescue Ranger. Capship pilots could literally become mobile stations, docking allied ships, repairing and refueling them in the field far from civilization.

Let's hear it for true support ships!
