Newcomer / Intro Suggested sidewinder fit for someone new to combat?

So I've been playing since launch and I'm pretty confident at flying in general, have no issues with docking (which I know a lot seem to find a challenge) but I always sucked at combat in the start so I've made most of my money flying trade. Currently sat on about 150k with a kitted out Hauler and could easily get 200k if I swapped back to a Sidewinder because im starting to get tired of just doing trade.

What kind of fit would you recommend for someone new/unsure about the combat side of the game? I know from watching some videos that Lasers are good for reducing shields while regular weapons are better against hulls but I'm not sure the sidewinder would benefit from cutting its overall firepower in half by having one of each type.

You stand a very good chance of dying in combat in a sidewinder. Insurance, ammo and repairs are going to kill your cash too. I'd recommend you get a bit of cash to pay for a bigger ship like a well kitted eagle and ship insurance.

I hear the Viper is also a good combat ship.

Hmm. I guess for now I'll just hang out in the combat sim.

One advantage of the sidewinder is that's it's cheap to replace, so you don't lose much by getting in your starter sidewinder or equivalent and trying out combat for a bit.

Buy an Eagle and build it up. The Eagle has the fastest turning rate and is cheap (repairs/fuel/modules). The Sidewinder and the Viper are multirole ships. If you want to focus on regular bounty hunting try the Eagle, it`s a fighter role ship.

Gave this a try as it was still easily within my price range, setup with some gimballed burst lasers and a multicannon (because im really bad at aiming). God I love this thing haha. Its so much more maneuverable than the sidewinder!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but what do you lose by using gimballed? I suppose there must be a trade off for the enhanced 'precision' (I am probably good as you at aiming that's why I am asking)

That was my loadout during most of the Beta testing. Excellent combat ship in my opinion, until you can afford a Cobra (which is where I'm at now).

I'd practise combat in the free sidey for a bit, doesn't matter if you get gunned down, and it'll build up your skill. Also, getting a kill in the basic ship feels good.

I always thought that a gimballed weapon has greater accuracy?

That's why they always cost more than fixed. But someone correct me if I am wrong!

But they didn't have gimballed weapons 29 years ago and all my kills then were with a fixed laser on a Cobra.

Back in the day the Beam laser was the weapon of choice.

I have a gimballed pulse laser and slowly working my way up!
