Suggesting an attitude indicator

Hi, I Gimped a quick thought on how an attitude indicator could be for landing procedures.

Although not very essential for "mail-slotting", a good attitude indicator could be useful for pad docking.
Especially on planet surfaces, where gravity is forcing you to approach and stay horizontal, this would be very handy.

EDIT: It is useful BEFORE the 3D display appears! When you are still approaching!

I really hope FD would develop such instrument.

What do you think?

Edit: in this example your nose is pointed in the right direction (pitch and yaw), but you have to roll ~40° to the right and "strafe" down and to the left with attitude thrusters.

I'm not sure how the coding works in ED and if it could be implemented. I mean with Super Cruise if all the details of positions of objects are known but yeah, it's a good idea. I've often thought about it myself.

Hmm..

- Pad docking already has a position finder (Compass) and a full 3D Attitude indicator (Docking Animation showing distances, 3D-attitude and 3D-positioning)
- landing on Planets also has a Attitude indicator (displayed in the main HUD)

So what gives?

It gives you the right "directions" BEFORE the docking 3D display
The compass with the dot alone is not sufficient as a good indicator, because it gives you information on only 2 of 6 degrees of freedom.
Ok, it's a game, you can land bouncing on the surface and nobody notices or cares, but I'd like to see it a good, beautiful and believable game.

Already exists in Horizons for surface ports. For outposts - As long as the outpost is locked it shows your pad and orientation, the holographic display is an exact replica of the outpost and works from any distance in normal space.

Edit -read you last post, seems you are trying to solve a problem that doesn't really exist. Who actually has problems aligning with the pad on an outpost? The pad itself is clearly visible from 5+ km out

The problem is when you are at LESS than 5 Km. I don't know you, but I can't see below my ship when I am horizontal. And I don't know if I am dropping on the landing pad or above some poor farmer boy house.
If the gravity is more than 1.5 I tell you that this could prove to be a problem.

The Holographic display to the left of your HUD is an exact replica of the outpost, it gives you the alignment if needed. Alignment is a non issue on any planet, the HUD has an attitude indicator as part of the approach suite.

Look at that Holo display next time you land, make sure it is locked in order for the orientation to display correctly. It's not just a pretty display :)

Personally I would like an attitude indicator similar (if not identical) to the one which is displayed on planets to complement the holographic display when landing on a pad in space. The angle of the holographic display makes it hard to determine the exact angle of the ship relative to the pad. A lot of practice with a certain ship will eventually lead the pilot to know the exact position he has to be in, but I like to be able to perform "perfect" landings each time with every ship.

PS: or at least have in incorporated in the holographic display. There are two bar indicators on the side (from what I could gather they are for speed and acceleration / thrust) which I rarely use / look at.

Oh, in 600 hours of play I didn't notice! :p
But, seriously, can't we have something that can guide us before the last 50 meters? Does an indicator bother you so much?

Nah, not at all mate :) Just don't see it as something the devs will add anytime soon. Thought I would point out the holo display as an option.
Maybe you're right, but I would be happy to see "Two indicators for vertical and horizontal axis atittude were added to the compass while docking permission is granted" in the patch notes.
Just saying that. ;)

You now when figuring out if I am level and pointing at my pad I tend to llok out the window - I find looking at the horizon tends to tell me if I am horizontal or not
