Suggestion: Active sensor for prospecting.

Ok, let me start by saying I like mining, the addition of collector limpets (quite some time ago now) was a godsend from scooping up each individual chunk, and at the time prospector limpets were a welcome break from simply blasting an asteroid to see what comes out. However, when you consider the technology of the SRV has a built in scanner for finding material deposits on planets, I find myself asking why there isn't a space alternative. we have passive scanners capable of doing detailed cartographic analysis in just a few seconds but we can't see what's inside an asteroid less than 2km's in front of us? sees a bit daft, so here's my thought:

I'd like to see some kind of spectroscopic analyser, similar in use to the scanner on the SRV (I.E. only works in a 45-90 degree angle but provides a way of differentiating different materials, perhaps by waveforms or colours or both)
It could have a very limited range, it might only scan the area in front of the ship up to a range of say 2km.
I could be an active scanner rather than the SRV's passive one, as for how it's equipped it could be an optional internal, or even require a hard point (I'm thinking the class 3 hard point on the belly of the python for example)

obviously it may also require a moderate amount of power.

Thoughts anyone?
