[Suggestion] Add force to weapons.

Posted this thought about big ships vs smaller ships, specifically python vs viper and the nerf call and such.

Skill should definitely be the main point, but if two equally skilled people fight, one has a python and one has a viper/cobra, then the python user should be the one with the advantage, not the cobra/viper.

Another idea might be add force to weapons? granted lasers would be tricky with that, but the idea that a large weapon hitting a small ship while the shields might be able to take a hit or two (though considering the power and size of large weapons, should they really?) it would significantly mess with the ships inertia, making them spin, pushing them back, e.t.c.?

thoughts?

It has.

More mass, more shield power, massive thrust power to its mass, hull structural resilience, auxiliary thrusters power induce deceiving roll speed par with light fighters...

... not counting the array of hard points to deploy all kind of weaponry.

What else do you miss ?

It was more in reference to those wanting python nerfed, I understand those that don't want money equal power and I 'sorta' agree, skill should be the determining factor.
In this situation it is the whole viper vs python situation, personally I think the viper is perhaps too strong for its price.

I missed nothing :) and should maybe have cut that part out, since it isn't really part of the suggested idea.

You could, but the mass of the projectiles vs the mass of the ship would mean very little overall effect.
Well in most cases, yes. But when it is a large weapon vs a small ship for example? equal ships vs each other very little impact, maybe only slightly cause the ship to turn and twitch, remember in space inertia even from a small thing can cause a movement, but when we are talking about a 'large' weapon vs a small ship, I would think the effect would be quite noticeable.

Specifically in regards to big low ammo weapons like the cannon of plasma accelerator it would be cool to see a smaller ship buckle under the weight of a full salvo. A sidewinder shouldn't just take 4 simultaneous cannon hits and just keep on cruising the direction it was.

A large weapon with low mass and high velocity would pierce the ship. You need high mass and low velocity to impart spin to the object hit.

If I'm not mistaken a good hit from a high power railgun (or multiple smaller ones) will still send a smaller ship careening out of control until the thrusters can put her back on course. You know when you get smacked by a Rail-Viper.
The main problem is that pesky Newton guy. F=MA...
Force = Mass X Acceleration. Small masses, even moving at bullet velocities, just don't carry the kinetic energy needed to overcome the inertia of a 200+ ton ship very dramatically and the ablative and radiative thrust from superheating a hull with lasers would account for next to nothing compared to the ship's thrusters.
Lasers do apply a bit of force, however. Next time you boom a ship shoot at it's hull scrap with your lasers (especially beams) and you'll send the bits skittering off spinning wildly.

Exactly, would be a nice addition to elite in my opinion, and it would give larger ships a natural advantage against smaller ships.

Add maybe that turrets on smaller weapons have a harder time tracking when the tiny ship twists and turns a lot being very agile, however on bigger ships that aren't that agile this wouldn't be an issue and as such turrets would track better?

If one or maybe both of these were added, I believe it would be quite a bit easier to balance tiny fast vs big slow.
