Hi everyone,
After playing with the new system colonization mechanics introduced in the Trabalizers update, I had an idea that I think could make the gameplay even deeper and more immersive.
Suggestion:
Allow players to assign hired crew members (the ones already onboard our ships) or hire additional NPCs to take on unfinished colony construction projects. These missions could be managed passively, similar to how mining drones or exploration data might work in other games.
How it could work:
This would:
I’m not expecting anything from this — just wanted to share the idea as a long-time fan of the game. Thanks to the devs and community for keeping Elite Dangerous evolving!

Allow players to assign hired crew members (the ones already onboard our ships) or hire additional NPCs to take on unfinished colony construction projects. These missions could be managed passively, similar to how mining drones or exploration data might work in other games.
How it could work:
- Select a colony project in progress
- Choose a ship and crew member (or hire a new NPC contractor)
- Provide required resources or payment
- Send them off to complete the project over time
- Receive periodic status updates and a final report upon completion
This would:
- Give our crew members more purpose beyond just sitting on the ship
- Add a sense of management and delegation, especially for veteran players with large fleets
- Make system colonization feel more dynamic and interactive
I’m not expecting anything from this — just wanted to share the idea as a long-time fan of the game. Thanks to the devs and community for keeping Elite Dangerous evolving!
