We know that both Michael Brookes and Sandro want chained missions in the game, & they even brought rudimentary chained mission mechanics into 1.5/2.0......but removed them in 2.1 (or so it seems). Whatever the reason for doing that, I do think they should try to bring full chained missions into 2.2.
What I am thinking of is a group of 3-6 different mission templates linked together by a common theme. For example, one chained mission might be "help us destroy the rebel menace" (Civil War/Unrest/War)-this might be comprised of a rebel transmission or encrypted data salvage mission, followed by an assault on a rebel controlled surface facility (mission specific PoI), followed up by some kind of hostage rescue or piracy mission against 1 or more rebel ships. There might be extra missions that fill in the spaces between the missions I mentioned, but each mission must be completed before the next can be started, & the payout isn't received until the end. Throw in some nice system/faction specific flavour text, some nice mission wrinkles from time to time and changing the order of the missions that make up the chain, & you have a lot of variety.
Other Chained Mission themes might include "Medical Emergency" (outbreak/war/civil war/famine)-a mixture of collecting valuable medical data from nearby systems and bringing them back, ferrying medical equipment, drugs and personnel to key locations, ferrying victims or the uninfected people away from the system or even destroying or otherwise preventing the escape of infected people trying to break quarantine.
"To boldly go...." (expansion) a mixture of exploration, passenger and settlement defense missions.
"No-one left behind...." help the faction solve the mystery of a missing pilot, probably would contain some kind of black box salvage, a search for the ship wreckage, perhaps even a hostage rescue and an assassination mission.
"You call this archaeology?" A mixture of exploration, ferrying of archaeologists to a planetary site, perhaps aiding them in their mission and bringing the stuff they find back to home base.
Anyway, just a thought. Do you agree that theme based, semi-proceeduraly based chained missions could work, & can you think of any more themes they could include?
