PLAYER CREATED CHANNELS
This topic has come up before, but recent conversations within player groups brought it to the forefront again in light of the Galactic Academy initiative.
Communication is the key to everything. The more widely, deeply, improved, and easily communication tools are used, the better for us all.
Player created channels help players enjoy the game more by providing communication and cooperation tools. Instead of referring to a separate screen or device for real time information on things such as pirate attacks, PVP, community goals, or forming wings, real time messages can be used for rapid coordination.
Global, system, station, faction, etc channels could be created, potentially with passwords to limit outsiders from using them.
Open channels could be made available based on location. For example, when you first jump into a system, a short message could alert you to the open channels in that system. "Greetings CMDR, welcome to the LHS 3447 system. The following channels are available:
#LHS_3447_open
#LHS_3447_trade
#LHS_3447_advice
#LHS_3447_recruiting
#LHS_3447_combat
Additional channels could be available based on declared allegiance to galactic power, power play, or minor faction.
#Federation_etc
#Aisling_Duval_etc
#Hutton_Trucking_etc
Custom channels could be created for player alliances of wings or guilds.
Include the option for channels to be across solo, open, and/or private play and those players in solo or private could be alerted for in game events.
Control of channels cloud be through an additional tab within the communication screen. Options could include whether or not you receive notifications from some or all channels, text color for different channels, voice chat over channels, and what channels to remain in after leaving a system.
