Ok, I have seen several times, and has happened to myself, loss of long term deep space data because the game mechanics like to interdict and kill you.
I propose a 2 part solution that leave the answers into the players hand AND add immersion AND adds game play for explorers..
General: A ongoing community mission to build a "Relay Station". These are little transmit locations that will allow a deep space pilot to drop off their collected data without flying back to the bubble. You have to be within a few km to actually use the "Relay Station" so you will stop there. There will be serious weapons keeping people from attacking each other is someone tries to attack you in one.
Community Relay Build. They won't be that hard but the can be built in 3 sizes.. the size of the "Relay Station" will allow it to have a longer range. It MUST be built in a system at can support it and may even require a certain type of planet to orbit so you can't just build them everywhere. They must be built within range of a either 1) Another "Relay Station" or 2) A high tech station.
The "Relay Station" is built for 500ly, 1000ly, 5000ly BUT the bigger they are the harder they are to build and have to within range and meet the build needs for that "Relay Station", since this is a 1 way transmission of your data you can have a 5000ly range linked to a 500ly but you can't just build a station hoping it will be linked up to the system later... it has to be in the chain. You can't have a station closer than 50ly of the maximum range of the destination (By this I mean If I am building at 500ly station it can't be built closer than 450ly to the connecting station or base)
ADDED: You can't build a station if it is already in range of 2 stations. So you are also limited to not clutter up space with a "Relay Station". As soon as a station is started that meets they criteria another may not be started within that range.
ADDED: There will be a Galactic Map signal that you can see only if you have a Utility Mount "Relay Station Signal Detector" added to your ship
Once built, and assuming you have the added Utility Mount "Relay Station Signal Detector" when in range of a completed "Relay Station" you can upload your data to the relay at a 5% loss of income that will then be used to pay for upkeep of the "Relay Station Network" (AKA- RSN)
