With the architecture in place for multiple step follow-on missions (2nd & 3rd follow ons, if I read the Patch Notes Correctly) I believe it is high time to significantly lift the chances of the 1st follow-on spawning.
Of course, if we do that now, then it does run the risk of these follow-ons becoming repetitive, due to the narrow range of follow-on options available for each primary mission type.
So I'd also suggest that it is high time for the range of follow-ons to be significantly expanded. These are some possibilities that immediately come to mind (with some "lore based" explanations, where possible).
-Assassination Missions: Like Massacre Missions, this could spawn a VIP Passenger mission ("With <$Target Name> taken care of, it is now safe for me to complete this journey"). Likewise, it could also spawn a Courier or Haulage follow-on mission.
-Black Box Salvage: This could spawn a Search & Rescue follow-on (Occupied Escape Pod or Cargo salvage-in Space or on a Planetary Surface), or a Liberation Follow-on (again, in space or on a planetary surface), or a Massacre Mission (the ships of the faction that caused the death of the pilot) or a Data Courier mission (we've gotten the relevant data from the black box, & we now need you to take it to the pilot's family at <$System Name>).
-Trade Data Salvage: This could spawn a Courier Mission (valuable data), a Haulage Mission or a "Purchase X tons of <$Commodity Name> & bring it back here" Missions.
-Rebel Transmission/Encrypted Data Salvage: This could spawn a Courier Mission, a Liberation Mission, a Surface Scan/Sabotage mission (Proc Gen or Persistent), a passenger mission or a Massacre Mission as a follow-on.
-Data Courier Mission: Could trigger almost any other Mission, currently available, as a follow-on.
-Massacre Mission: Could trigger a Data Courier/Haulage mission follow-on (With the <$faction name> ships seriously reduced, it is now safe to transport this cargo/data).
-Liberation/Surface Salvage Mission: could trigger a Passenger or Haulage follow-on (the "item" you were liberating/salvaging).
-Surface Scan/Sabotage (Proc Gen or Persistent Settlement): Could trigger an Assassination, Liberation, Piracy, Passenger or Massacre Mission.....dependent on the context of the primary mission.
-Piracy Mission: Much the same as the follow-ons as for the Liberation/Surface Salvage Mission.
-Passenger Missions: Depending on the Passenger type, these could spawn all kinds of follow ons related to the original passenger-courier, haulage, purchase & return, assassination, salvage, liberation & even massacre.
Anyway, those are the main ones I could think of, off the top of my head. Can anyone think of any other mission types that should spawn follow-ons, & what type of follow-ons should spawn? Can anyone think of any follow-ons I might have missed?
Look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts on this subject.
