I've read a few Threads where people managed to limb to a nearest station on emergency Oxygen and a badly damaged ship - just to find out they're unable to contact the Station to obtain the mandatory landing clearance.
So here's my Suggestion :
Give the stations the ability to recognize series of Landing light flashes (could be a SOS sequence or just flashes performed near a such detector on the Station) or generally create an ability for the Landing Light to obtain a valid landing Clearance.
Finding the cleared landing Pad might either require manual location with the compass (that might be a tad difficult, but should work). Otherwise using steady white lines (as opposed to the normal yellow running lines) would help and match the white Landing light.
Acknowledgement and positive clearance to land would also require a light signal from the Station (i.e. the Station giving a steady green light) - or if those definitely never fail via standard means.
That would solve that issue in a pretty stylish way.
(needless to say - landing clearances based in visual signals when lacking normal means of commucations/during emergencies are standard in civil and military aviation since decades)
