Suggestion for assassination mission?

So, I took this assassination mission in one system to hunt down and destroy a guy. Almost 170K credits so I thought, why not.

Got in the neighboring system and started scanning all ships I could see on my radar. No trace of him (is there a trick to track those assassination targets?).

At some point, a poor NPC in an Adder decides to interdict me. Since I was getting a bit bored after 20 minutes of searching, I thought, why not again.

Start pummeling the guy then, 3 security ships drop by. They just circle around, hard points retracted. Being distracted by the security ships, I fail to see the NPC activating this FSD and fleeing. Damn.

I routinely target one of the security ship to see what he was doing and what ship it was. It happens to be the guy in the mission! He's flying a Python, with 2 other combat ships, although I didn't pay much attention to them. And he's a member of the security forces of that system. Being probably a bit tired, I decide to engage him with my Clipper. Not a very good idea. I brought him to one ring of shield when my own shields collapsed, even though I had used 2 shield cells. That's because the 2 other guys with him were pounding me. So, I started taking damage and decided to get the hell out of there. Successfully escaped to another system. Docked and repaired but now, what do I do? I'm wanted in that system, which is in the Empire, of which I'm also a supporter. I have a bounty on my head for opening fire on a security ship. should I go back in the hope that I might find him not in a wing this time or is he likely to be in a wing? I still have about 6 hours to complete the mission. I'm a little worried if I abandon it that it could hurt my reputation. The impact on reputation was high but impact on influence is low. My Clipper is equipped with 2 C3 gimbaled beam lasers and 2 D2 gimbaled pulse lasers.

What would you do?

Different types of assassination missions have certain ship types.

Legal targets:
Pirate Lord: Anaconda
Agitator/Terrorist speaker: Python
Prison Escape: Viper
Deserter: Eagle (not very sure, only done this once)

Illegal targets:
Celebrity: Orca
Religious Leader: Forgot, only done it once long time ago
Cult Leader/Idol: Type-6
General: Python with wingmen
Military Strategist: Python with wingmen
Hero: never done this before

Unsure:
Whistleblower:
Ringleader:

What you have taken was probably a general or military strategist, either of which would be affiliated with the local authority force and thus CLEAN. Pick your targets carefully when taking missions if you want to maintain a good reputation, or slaughter those clean targets with impunity in anarchy systems like I did these days.:D

Your assault bounty should be cleared in 8 minutes, after that it's up to you. If you are confident you can take down that general then go for it. The rep you gain by completing the mission would probably offset the rep hit of murdering. Otherwise just abandon the mission. It's not worth risking your life to assassinate someone clean.

Assassination missions (with named targets) have been broken since December last year......I've put a ticket in and 2 requests in the Bugs forum - so have many other people - good luck with getting it fixed..... :(

What are broken about them exactly? I have done plenty and never had any issues. As Kobune stated, some targets are clean, as they should be, its down to you to read the flavor text for the mission before accepting it or not. It's quite clear there if the target is going to be wanted or clean and its down to you if you want to take the risk or not. Just because a member of a minor faction asks you to go and murder somebody, doesn't mean its legal or right even for the high payout. Unless there is something else you are referring to as being broken?

I also haven't had issues either so what bugs are going on? Navy Progression assassinations are normally the only ones I do if I get the choice.

Apart from general irritation at not being able to find targets, they don't count into my stats. See my post today in the Bugs forum.

Well for me personally I don't have an issue finding the, it's always either in supercruise, or in USS/SSS every time without fail. The bug with them not counting towards your assassination totals stat is irritating though, very much agreed.

Yeah, checking USS/SSS is a must, I guess some people might not get that NPCs are going to be in them though. I have not really paid attention prior to 1.2 about assassinations, but now currently merely bounty hunting randomly in SSS for kill X amount of pirates in system X adds to my assassination count. So perhaps if you want to pad that for what ever reason give that a shot.

Thanks for the tip. I'll stop by and see if he's still in wing. If it is, I'll just abandon it.

I'd check his combat rating honestly.

I took one of those guys out in an Asp with no shield boosters - I'm sure a clipper could handle him. Just target his PP.

But mine was like, 'mostly harmless' or something, so that was probably why - I'm a decent pilot, but I'm not -that- good.

I finally abandoned it. When back to the system for about half an hour, checking all ships showing on my radar. Dropping to investigate USS/SSS yielded nothing. So, I dropped it. The guy was master and the 2 other guys with him were also master. That was a bit an uneven fight with my not so good fighter skills.

It's a bit cheesy, but when I go after a clean target in a wing, I ram to take down their shields first. It gives a significant headstart, as the wing doesn't open fire until I do.
