I understand that in a firefight you should check your fire. I don't mind having to pay the 200-400 credits if that happens. What I'm less enthusiastic about is having security turn on me in the middle of the dogfight while I'm trying to help them. Personally, if someone's laser glances off my shield I'd just shrug it off. In a 10+ man dogfight, mistakes happen. Still, I can get why security might take a dim view to pilots firing willy-nilly, so I have a suggestion: make assault give you a fine, rather than a bounty - that way, you still have to pay for your indescretion, but you don't run into silliness such as getting ganked by the people you're helping, even if the real bad guy is still flying around.
Yes, you can sneak into a station or go to an outpost, but it gets tiresome being driven off by security repeatedly - especially when the jerks seem to be knowingly drifting into my line of fire. It's somewhat immersion-breaking to have the SpaceCops turn on you, frothing at the mouth over what doesn't even amount to scuffed paint. Again, I don't mind having to pay out extra money if I accidentally give someone a shield check, I just think it could be implemented better.
