Suggestion for Frontier Developments: a weekly Q&A

This is a fantastic idea, definitely something I'm going to look in to doing. Now things have calmed (slightly) after the last few week's controversy, we'll have more time to put something good together. We've been busy arranging a launch party, and a press tour, and we've been held back with most of the information we can give.

I'm sorry Edward but I dont think much of your chances of being able to put anything together if what David Braben your lord and master has been saying is anything to go by. He recently said, in his own Q & A I think it was, that the guys are so busy that after launch on the 16th that even the newsletters will become less frequent so if this does happen then I dont see how they can make time to sit down and take part in a Q & A session. I hope I misunderstood him and that something can be arranged.

We'll be moving towards showing off this information in different ways. We've got a lot planned from a community perspective. But guess what, I'm not going to tell you every single detail... ;)

Ed,

In the short term, while these things are being set in motion, perhaps someone could at least keep the website up to date? Currently the most recent news post is 2 months old talking about beta 2.

As things stand all the news seems to come through this forum and the newsletters, but anyone new and interested in the game is naturally going to go to the 'news' section of the website, and might be put off by it's current stagnation. This is especially true since the link to the forums is hidden away down the bottom of the page (which seems a strange choice to me, but that's a different topic!)

We are on it.

I would much rather be reading stuff that relates to the game universe, what's happening, who has done what and gone where - rather than reading dev q&a or a regular "community meet and greet".

In particular - what happened to GalNet? There's been nothing on the feed apart from the automated market/traffic statistics for nearly a month.

Very interesting thread.

I think one of the earlier posts really hit the nail on the head - everyone was directed to the DDF for how a particular feature would pan out - and it was assumed by everyone that the DDA was what would make v1.0 of the game. The bit I'm still unclear on is whether the bits of the DDF which aren't fulfilled, for example Wings/Alliances (or even sub-items like drones for mining), are simply deferred to a later release or are not coming at all (for whatever reason).

If the DDF posts could maybe be updated with each feature being "Done", "Planned", "Dropped" then I think that would be of benefit to all. It's not like doing that would hold back any surprises since the DDF topics are there in the public anyway.

I'd like to see a regular dev blog. What are you working on? What have you fixed? What issues are you struggling with?

And, yes, in-game news, though it sounds like you already have ideas for players generated news (latest DDF topic).

How about connecting the in-game cmdr with your forum user? Maybe to much hazzle to be worth it (and the security problems opening up perhaps?). Im looking forward to the 16th to see what you have in store.

We've been busy arranging a launch party, and a press tour, and we've been held back with most of the information we can give.... we've got to keep a few secrets about the game. Why does everyone want to know absolutely everything anyway? For what it's worth, I'm sorry about the lack of regular communication.

If I said yes would it make any difference? You can PM me the secrets. Promise I wont tell :p

Glad to hear that you are taking Coms more seriously. This has been a long standing gripe of mine that tends to flare up from time to time.

For sure SC are the masters of communication and generating excitement. (Time will tell if they can deliver.) But I think DB has a good way about him when it comes to screen presence and it would be a shame to waste all that infectious enthusiasm. With less than a month to go perhaps we'll get one or two "10 for THE Commander"?

Excellent idea. However, I wonder would the "Dropped" status be a fan to the flames?

Everyone didn't assume that. I certainly didn't. Have you read all the stuff in those docs? Maybe if they were pushing for a 2018 release date, but not Q4 2014.

People were directed to the DDF, but usually by other posters, and not FD staff. Those directions were usually posted in response to a proposal for something that had already been discussed by the DDF members, or in response to request for information as to how a particular feature would be handled.

Specification != Implementation. "This is what we want to do" is different from "this is definitely going to be done in time and on budget". Anyone who has dealt with contractors or has been one is painfully aware of this. Perhaps some people weren't aware, and I think that more disclaimers could have been plastered about to make that clear. It seemed pretty commonsense, to me at least, and I'm sure I'm not alone by any means.
