Every so often, I get to thinking that, with all the pre-existing & new assets in the game, then why not use them to add a little extra spice to some of the current missions.
For example, you have an assassination or liberation mission, but rather than have your quarry duke it out in open space, maybe they're lying in ambush within a belt or planetary ring-or some man-made location with plenty of places to hide (like a debris field, or an outpost, or a Capital Ship dock). Alternatively, a mission could start in open space, but your quarry flees, forcing you to follow them into the locations I mentioned above....or maybe even down close to a planetary surface.
Another mission wrinkle for these mission types, though, could be for you to have to arrive ahead of time, & be the one launching the ambush on your quarry.
Massacre missions could also benefit from having them occur in more varied locations, preferably ones with lots of tight turns, & places to hide.
Salvage missions, too, could occassionally benefit from the items being in hard to reach places-due to natural or man-made features. Of course, these missions could also be livened up if there was a wrinkle involving rival ships coming to salvage the same items as you, or that the area is under routine patrol by local security forces (if the salvage is illegal).
