Suggestion: Limpet controllers house limpets internally within bays

I don't think this is a particularly new idea, but why not have the limpet controllers themselves contain several bays to house the limpets as opposed to using cargo space.

Limpets rather than self destructing after hitting the time limit will become inactive (due to fuel depletion) and will need to be manually scooped up for refueling (refueling could be free, or done via synthesis) before being redeployed again for active service.

Prospector limpets could eject themselves from an asteroid on being triggered again and recalled to the ship for future deployment (and automatically once the resources in an attached asteroid were depleted).

I guess this came to mind with the new repair limpets being suggested in the near future. A great thing for explorers so that they (me as well!) have a relatively complete repair suite (well I don't know if those repair limpets will actually fix advanced damage like paint and structual wear as opposed to just hull structure). The problem though being that 2 precious slots would be needed (one for a small cargo rack, another for the controller itself); having limpets attached to a controller (much like SRV's are attached to a bay), would free up another slot for exploration ships with a limited number of slots.

Another possibility (maybe a better idea) is to use synthesis to rebuild a new limpet from scratch instead of collecting inactive limpets for refueling (especially if refueling is going to require materials anyway). This would be less painful with the occasional suiciding of collector limpets, otherwise you would need to go all the way back to a base that sells the correct limpets to refill the Limpet controller bay.

Or for even more convenience we could have free refueling for inactive limpets combined with fairly cheap synthesis for those that are accidently lost.

Since I primarily spend my time exploring, I'm pretty limited in my experience outside the occasional mining with my Python, so I can't really see all the other drawbacks that other players do. So if you have any other ideas/opinions that you think will work better (or perhaps don't think the system needs any improvement currently as it), post it, but please give explanations to support any ideas/opinions you might have.

Thanks!

I've never been happy with how huge Limpet Controllers are compared to what they do (basically just a computer & some communication gear). Having them also contain their limpets would at least give more logic to their size. I also dislike having to juggle cargo space vs limpet supply when mining. Sure, you can come up with a rough rule of thumb that will ensure your limpet supply depletes roughly in sync with your cargo increase, but to me it is more an irritation than a positive aspect of the gameplay.

Limpet synthesis would certainly help with this, and if it were somehow tied to the size of the controllers it could also offer some logical explanation there as well - the controllers might be considered to also incorporate the limpet fabrication facilities. Or perhaps the controllers could have facilities to store quantities of the required synthesis materials outside of our personal stash?

It's not the size, it's how stupidly they scale. Each grade is four times larger, but only controls one more limpet. So it eventually gets to the grade 7 controller, which controls a whole four limpets for only 128 tons of space. But just to make complete sense, you can reinforce your grade 7A controller, so that it weighs in at 512 tons.

The only thing I can imagine is that due to the high levels of solar radiation, they have had to resort to the use of valve-based computer technology.

I don't care if they take up cargo space or expire when prospecting. The only thing I care about is that they just stay in the cargo hold of the ship when you store it. I hate having to sell them all off, transfer ships, then go on with my business in the other ship. Often times I forget to re-buy them again when I'm changing back into my mining ship until I'm already at the mining spot and I have to go all the way back and re-purchase the stupid things...

khaos526: fully agree - in general I would like to be able to leave cargo (and even passengers) in a ship when storing it; would make temporarily changing roles, or switching to another ship better suited to the current role, much easier. It's probably a topic for a different thread, though - but one I'd happily +1 :)
