Hello, Loophole.
Well, this is ironic. I spent years lobbying for ship-names*, but here I feel a need to disagree.
If it's a "proper" build, something that a Commander's made the effort to carefully put together, then a proper name makes sense. That's about ownership, that's about the completion and closure of an effort, that's about - for want of a better word - parenthood.
On the other hand, if it's just another identical, utterly disposable SRV or SLF - something churned out like so many photocopies, exactly the same as everyone else's - then a name seems entirely redundant, something of a waste of resources.
An SRV has no individual identity at all. Who cares what it's called?
At best, an automated identifier - say, the parent ship's name or serial number, with an appended few digits or letters - would seem appropriate enough. In my view, a nice paint-job's as much as they're worth, really.
If we ever get SRV construction that works in similar fashion to how ships are built, then I will change my position, accordingly.
*(Want to know the definition of sod's law? It's me spending over two damn years pushing for ship-names, only to see my laptop's graphics card completely pack up in the middle of the beta. I swear, that was so funny, I could have punched a husky. Raaah!)
