I understand why some people want depth and stories, yet others want an open ended sandbox. Lots of games have no stories; it's a valid formula, but it's unsatisfying for some players.
My recommendation would be for FD to create a new game franchise, The Stories of Elite.
These games would be built by a separate team, use the Cobra engine and many of the ED assets. They would tell the stories of the Elite universe in a first person adventure/shooter style. This would be a form of space legs, but in a traditional semi-linear mapped level format.
It would be a way to inform players of significant past events and increase revenue for FD and give ED players an emotional attachment to the ED universe. It could also provide a diversion for players who get burned out due to grinding. It could alleviate complaints on the forum, of people who miss the story aspect of ED.
Best of all, there would be no licensing fees. To head off complaints, these games should be free to the lifetime backers.
