SUGGESTION: Petition to add Proxima b to the game with Proxima Centauri Nav Beacon

Except nav beacons have nothing to do with travelling to a star system. Hyperspace jumps always point to the highest mass body in the system.

A planet very much like "Proxima b" is already in the game.

Eden: 0.66 Earth-masses, orbital period 31 days.
Proxima b: ~1.3 Earth-masses, orbital period 11 days.

Frankly, given that Eden is an entirely fictitious planet and the scientists back in the 1990s (when the Alpha Centauri system as it appears in ED was first designed) were saying that Proxima probably didn't have any planets, the statistics for Eden are close enough to the truth for Braben & Co. to be considered a prophet. The only thing he got wrong was the discovery date (Eden was not discovered until 2038). Granted, Eden is smaller than Proxima b, so would have been harder to detect if it had been there instead.

According to ED lore, Eden was the first planet outside the solar system where water was detected; it helped spur on the first interstellar probes, hoping to find Eden a paradise planet ripe for colonization. The fact that Eden was an aqueous-greenhouse hellhole proved something of a disappointment, but the scientists stayed and built an inhabited outpost there anyway. Hutton Orbital is the end result.

IMO, they shouldn't add "Proxima b" to the Centauri system. If anything, they should simply tweak Eden's stats to make it slightly bigger and slightly closer to Proxima.

Yes. Look into the fictional history of Eden and Hutton Orbital.

As I recall, Eden was in ED lore the first planet with water signatures discovered outside the solar system. We went there. It was inhospitable. Someone built Hutton Orbital near it and then very nearly forgot about it.

There is a memorial plaque in the wall at Hutton inscribed with the legend 'Perditio Tempus'

Eden = Proxima B

The rest is history.

Yeah what they need to do is enable short inter-system jumps to far out stars. That would remove a load of hastle out of travelling around these massive systems. Nothing to do with the navbuoy though.

I think all FD need to do is just mod the present system they have (to bring it upto date with orbital periods ect) without adding anything. There is no need to add another planet. Isn't it great though the David totally called it way back in '93 with Elite II? ;)

I went and checked out the Alpha Centauri system in Elite not long after I heard the news about Proxima b and I was amazed by how the fictional Eden is to the real thing. Like you said Eden is just a bit smaller with a longer orbit time but everything else just seems so accurate. A rocky planet very close to the star that possibly could have a water based atmosphere. They even recon that life on Proxima b would really struggle from all the radiation given off by Proxima's X-rays, just like Eden. Proxima b has even spurred on plans for interstellar probes just like Eden's discovery did in ED lore.

Exactly! Just tweak the data to match that of Proxima-b in the next patch.

How about we rename it to "Centauri Prime" :D

add promxim b as a actual body if its not already there

Just open the galaxy map and go to Alfa-Centauri system and bookmark New Eden as Proxima-b or Centauri Prime or Donald Trump or whatever you like :)
