[Suggestion] Public chat channel

The game is in need of more/improved player communication, and I believe this could be achieved by the implementation of a public chat. I understand the reasoning for not having a public chat channel for entire systems, which is why I suggest having a public chat channel for each separate station and outpost instead. I'd love to dock at a station to take a break from piracy and smuggling, and to just have a friendly chat with a local or passerby having stopped for fuel.

A dedicated chat channel would be created as soon as a person docks to a station or outpost. Anyone who docks after that person will simply join the chat channel. Once the host leaves, the host privileges will be passed on to the next docked player. Once the last player leaves, the chat channel will cease to exist. (Because having 4 billion simultaneous and constant chat channels simply wouldn't work)

+1. It's not as if we currently have a chat spam problem, in fact virtually no-one uses chat right now so something should be done to improve it. It would be simplest if the *default* chat was to everyone in your radar, and you can select single-player chat if that's what you really want.

The FD team are hugely talented but you can feel the lack of understanding of UI fine tuning, i.e. UI navigation paths tend to be symmetrical for each option rather than streamlined for the option that's selected 99% of the time. This is likely to lead to a mistake if they implement this 'all chat' option, their key sequence would be 'select key to chat'.. 'select option to single person or multi-person chat'.. 'enter chat'.

Successful chat in multi-player games (like BF4) is 'KEY', chat, enter, which I guess is the minimum.

I always say hello when I see another commander but they rarely respond. I think there has been some issues with the comms recently. I would like to see improvements to communications and am up for the station comms idea, even if it's just a commander bulletin board within a station, which could be further enhanced to allow player based missions being offered. I do beleive ED devs are planning something in this vein already though. Not sure where I got that from though, sorry

I'm under the same impression. I think I've read that the Wings-update in the first quarter of 2015 will add some tweaks and fixes for the communication/chat experience overall. Although, I don't think anything more specific has been said.

The same ...what most people seems to forget ..immersion or not... lots of players are using TS or other voice chat outside the game ...why limit it when people doing the voice chat anyway ( outside game unlimited by system only rule )...and lastly don't forget ..under the name of immersion the developer has forgotten there are players that are mutes or deafs who can't use voice app at all whether in game or outside..limiting to system only chat/voice chat was already taxing for people who values in communication n teamplay heavily ..so what ? This game is not for us ? We should go play other game under the name of 'immersion' ? why not state that clearly on their website before buying it in the 1st place ...geeze oops ? Give us the ability to our friends at least and not limited by systems hopefully ...or let us form a channel of our own so we can invite like minded people who want to chat ..some people are loners ..some are not ..trust me i know some players already thinking of selling their account and spread the news of its limitation on communication in the game ..its the main turn away for more players from coming in atm . Thank you. ...At least give us public chat in system or station ..and its optional for those that don't want it ..why stop people that wants it ?

I tried to contact a dozen different commanders recently but didn't have a single response. Either quick chat option is broken or people don't care, though I really don't believe that. Anyway, I totally support the idea of station-wide chat, it would be really cool to be able to talk to other commanders in the cantine :)

That was one of the funnest things in Jumpgate able to see who's docked at the station and chat with them. The fact that there's no communication other than ship to ship is a bit strange. Actually I'm finding this game strange all together it feels more like it's in Beta still lol

I had a brief conversation last night, but I didn't even notice someone had sent me a message for a few minutes. The game seems to purposefully under emphasize comms, like they want to make a single player game.

The proposal I put in another thread is still one I stand by, of emulating radio communications we currently use. When I run across another player, I want to talk to them. Chat and voice. Not that I select that ship and have to go out of my way to do it, that's not social. Just an open channel so all of us in the same region can talk, and sub channels that allow us to talk on a wider range. Without that element of other humans being there, I don't have much reason to start up this game again.

The developers did a great job recreating the original elite, but 20 years is a long time in the world of games. Expectations have changed.
