Suggestion regarding decay

Progress for reputation should be accelerated in regards to lost reputation. That way there's a penalty for outright abandoning a faction, but a leave of absence is not punished heavily (you can quickly regain rep lost with time.)

For the record, decay is a terrible mechanic, period.

I do not mind some decay, but I think it would be more reasonable if decay would only start when you did not earn a certain reasonable minimum of merits in a cycle.
The current system is too corrosive as far as I am concerned and in the long run it is demotivating. It is for me at least.

I really love PP. It adds a necessary political layer to Elite's universe and gives it and identity and direction.
That is all great stuff, but the way decay works feels really unpleasant to me and in the long run it will make me stop participating because it is too demanding.

If rep didn't decay you could grind to the top then decide you've had enough and never play again or stop bothering with PP, you'd permanently block a top slot. Decay is sensible from a player turnover (game and PP) point of view.

What do you mean by "block a top slot"? My position in rep has nothing to do with yours, except maybe you have to fight my clipper one day. Decay just discourages players from going about their own time table. Mechanically it makes sense for PP, and rp wise I can see a case of "what have you done for me lately" for factions.

You don't ignore a war veteran's past contribution, because that makes you a horrible person. Maybe you don't send him to kill a high priority target if he's been out of action for 50 years. But if he proves he's capable put him on the fast track to his former active status.

From a gameplay perspective, rep is generally an annoyance, but I feel it does have a fun place in this universe. Don't ruin it by forcing me to redo it, that adds nothing to the game.

It decay's it doesn't get zeroed once your up you can stay up with no great effort. The war vet analogy works in favour of decay current activities count for more than past actions, but past actions still count (just not as much).

Unless I spend a lot of time offline, in which case I'll have to do all that work all over again.

You need to grind your way up (if you want) to get the special weapons, once you've done that does it matter ?. If you are grind inclined and really want to be at the top you can be, or you can just not bother. PP isn't a good credit earner it's a mission structure creator for people who want to be guided in their actions/join a clan.

If it feels like work I don't bother with it, I beta tested PP and haven't touched it since I like to do my own thing.

our point being, there is no "taking up a top slot" they dropped the whole "only top 10 in power can be rating 5" before it even came out of beta.

But if you grind yourself to the point where you're at the top then leave or stop PP'ing, you stay at the top altering the numbers FD uses to calculate thresholds (everyone can't be at the top or it wouldn't be the top) and you make the faction look like it's better supported than it really is making balancing potentially more difficult for the devs.

Decay makes PP work, if you want to support a power you have to actually support it consistently not grab the badge and never touch it again.

please read the PP documentation, EVERYONE CAN be at the top. If you get to rank 5 in week 1 and then do no pp for weeks, you will drop ranks. It is NO LONGER based on other CMDR's efforts, YOU hit 10k merits YOU ARE rank 5, no matter what. next week, do nothing, you will have 5k merits and be rank 4...

If the reward was for reaching each rank, and it was a one time payout, then decay would be a problem. But, as it is the rewards are for participation each week. The decay is necessary to balance out the weekly payouts. Without the decay PP would be short lived as people would grind to the top, and then abandon the whole thing.

I'm not talking about merits, I'm talking about reputation. What's the point of rep decay?

General Rep decay has two functions. It makes it difficult to stay in the top tiers with multiple major factions. It makes getting out of 'Hostile' relations with factions easier. It has been mentioned many times that it won't drop you below Friendly. I see it as mirroring real life. "What have you done for me lately" springs to mind.

I do sincerely suggest that you wait to see how it will affect you before you make any judgements. This decay could not have affected you yet. Knee-jerk reactions to a word, in this case 'decay', aren't very reliable.

Right so everyone gets to rank 5, 30% stop PP'ing but stay at rank 5 (getting wodges of credits) even though they no longer bother, this makes the numbers wrong and explains decay. If they introduce no decay you could exploit 50,000,000 every week by grinding to the top (once, not every week) and not touching PP again.

It forces you to support your chosen faction, and keep supporting it. Supporting factions is pretty much what PP boils down to.

last try before I give up on you. YOU CANNOT GET TO RANK 5, STOP PLAYING PP AND STAY AT RANK 5 FOREVER MORE!!! there is decay and I never said there shouldn't be, I was simply pulling you up on the fact from your first post that you believed ppl would "block a top slot", they can't, there is no "top slots" anymore, that idea was abandoned before leaving beta.

So you agreed, by disagreeing with me. Thanks for clearing that one up. Isn't rank 5 a top slot ?.

You're missing the point.....

Here's merits. Merits give you nifty rewards weekly, like money and passive bonuses.

Here's reputation. Reputation changes npc attitude toward you and gives you access to certain permits and discounts.

Now that we have that cleared up. I AM TALKING ABOUT REPUTATION. We as a thread are talking about reputation. No one cares about merits right now.

We've already done this bit, rep decays so you have to actively support factions you like. It also means that factions who don't like you will calm down over time and not hunt you to the end of the galaxy.
