Suggestion: Ship-board media player

This idea is a "just for fun" type of idea rather than a drastic gameplay change. However, I think this would be a really great addition to the game.

The idea:

Be able to play music from your computer hard drive through a menu in your ship. There would also be numerous advantages to this over running music through some other program in the background. I would like to include numerous custom settings such as, combat playlists, supercruise playlists, automatic volume decrease when someone speaks on comms, etc.

Advantages:

- Control over music in game without having to minimize
- Not be forced to choose voice comms or music, as music can be set to auto quiet when another player speaks.
- Can have awesome tunes, such as John Williams 'Battle of Endor' theme blast when you get attacked.
- Mitigate the "boring-ness" some players experience on long-haul trips
- Just further customization which all players enjoy.

Tell me you wouldn't be stoked if you stumbled on this in game.

Something like this is a perfect example of something modders could implement while devs implement more critical things.

Spotify running in the background pretty much already does this. Can control Spotify thru a smartphone or tablet app without having to minimize or alt tab. When you open the spotify app on your phone it automatically detects that you're logged on in your pc and lets you control it while still playing on your pc speakers. No need to synchronize to the same network either.... it just works.

The only thing it couldn't do is have in-game playlists, such as combat, supercruise, entering a new system, and volume reduction when a player speaks.

It would also just be cool to find your music controls in your cockpit. Players would love that

True...
If the in cockpit player had access to the spotify database this would be great. What you're suggesting seems like youd have to have music saved on your hard drive. And thats something that less and less people are doing nowadays with all these streaming options.

I would like an embedded media player / internet radio type of interface in the cockpit too. This has been suggested before (as was the in-cockpit clock) but I don't know if F D came back on it.

A while ago someone posted a "skin" (if that is correct tern in this case) to allow a minimal VLC player windowed onto the screen in-game. VLC works as a media player and can play streams so is an internet radio too I suppose. I gave it a try but didn't like it too much. Maybe someone can give further info or maybe alternatives or updates.

Well - for Vive users there's OpenVRDesktopDisplayPortal, which allows to project videos from various sources (including VLC, Youtube, MPC, Netflix etc...) onto a freely scalable and positionable window in VR, either bound to a fixed position in the headset or a fixed position in the gameworld. I personally went for the latter and the effect is like having a semi-transparent holographic 80 inch beamer image in the game.

Did a 10 hour mining session last weekend and watching a season of game of thrones whilst doing it really rendered it a lot less dull.

Love this idea, here's another...

As we are getting new stations in Guardians, hows about a different docking tune for all the new types of station?

Must be loads, the whole planet suite for example, in the public domain that could be easily added in for us docking computer lazy types.

(Keep the Blue Danube for the 2001 stations and Beeb memories).

I just have youtube with a long playlist on my other monitor. Elite runs quite happily in windowed mode and I can have my VA and a web browser all up on different windows without having to minimize a thing.

EvE tried this a while back. Web browser, jukebox etc.

The Jukebox was popular as hell but then got removed for no apparent reason and the web browser never got updated to new web standards so nothing rendered properly on it.

This thread made me realise that my new commander which I bought in the steam sale means I can try out the Steam music player. I have not noticed a method of getting it to see anything beyond my physically connected hard drives so no internet radio and no connection to my NAS with it's huge music library.

However I am pleased that it runs and can be brought up on-screen within the game with no conflicts and seems OK (if simple).

Listening to Bruch whilst navigating the galaxy if just great.

Come on Frontier give us a media player on our dashboards (our passengers need one)!

This would be a perfect thing to implement with the upcoming Commanders expansion!!

All players on the ship could control it and hear the same tunes and the same time! :D

Closed this and another thread as they pretty much cover the same subject. :)
