I would like to propose a suggestion and see what everyone thinks about it. The idea is a boost for supercruise, which works by holding down your regular boost button. When activated, the computer would display the message, "FSD operating beyond safety parameters" and fuel would drain rapidly. There would be a bit of feedback and instability in flight, but the acceleration and max supercruise speed would increase. Minor damage could occur to the FSD after extended use. The overdrive could be an optional purchase or standard. Zero throttle + boost would result in faster turning and blackout mechanics. Ships using it would have a different color wake. I was thinking that the audio effect could be an extremely unnerving shepard tone combined with metal stresses.
Pros:
Another incentive for extra fuel tanks and repair modules.
A way to catch up with ships for interdiction or get away if you're paying attention.
Reduced travel time in supercruise to most stations, except the exceptionally distant ones due to massive fuel constraints.
A break in the monotony of spaceflight and an extra feeling of danger.
A way for explorers to dump fuel needed for jump range.
Cons:
More stranded pilots getting greedy with the boost and losing track of fuel or destroying their FSDs
