This has probably been said/suggested many times and now it’s my turn.
They keep adding more things we need to put into the Optional Internals. They don’t give us more optional internals when they do this. It’s pretty obvious from the ships (especially the older ships) that at one point the only “scanner” was the discovery scanner and most (every original?) ship has at least one size 1 slot for it.
The problem, now there are three size 1 only items and ships that have this huge wasted space sticking these things in bigger slots.
So, how about we take something from the 20th century and apply it to the 34th? Can we have an equipment rack? That is a new item that you can put into your ship that turns a size 2 slot into 2 size 1 slots (or a size 3 into 3, or a size 4 into 4, etc)?
This could/should be limited to a specific subset of items but at the very least:
Discovery scanners (they are all size 1)
Detailed Surface Scanner (it is size 1)
Automatic Landing Computer (it is size 1)
All of those items are basically sensors and software you hook into your ship’s computer to do extra things that aren’t part of the basic ship (like adding a better radio to your car).
Personally, I think you should also be able to put limpet controllers in there, but as those come in different sizes, I must assume they are more than just a radio transmitter and some added software to manage the limpets.
If we exclude the limpet controller, the only value to this is to let you put the two scanners into a size 2 slot, freeing up a size one slot. This has very limited advantage but could be enough for some people to consider a few more ship options.
