Suggestion To Rename Planets

Message to Universal Cartographics

I have completed a survey of a one hundred cubic light year volume of space in the Sagittarius-Carina Arm, Oob Broae sector. This includes scanning and mapping every body, landing where possible and collecting biological samples.

While the ultimate dream would be to have all of those systems renamed from Oob Broae to Chiokis, I realise that would be a monumental task. So I would like to request renaming the two Earth-like Worlds I discovered in that area.

#1 Oob Broae DE-H c11-3 A 1 to be renamed Helga's Paradise in memory of my late partner, Helga Baten.

#2 Oob Broae LA-F c12-1 6 to be renamed Rigel's World (because who doesn't want a world named after themselves?).

I ask for that you honour this small request in recognition of my service to Univeral Cartographics over the past five years.

Thank you in advance for your consideration!

There are 419,292 ELW that have been discovered by other players, I very much doubt they will start renaming ELW's after the discoverer now because there's a big line in front of you already!

Slight derail... your name is Rigel? You're not trying to cover up the fact you are actually Dominar Rygel XVI of the Hynerian Empire with 600 billion subjects are you?

:D

Agreed, we can't even get them to name systems, much less individual planets.

I think it'd be great & a really popular update if players could name persistent stuff in a way that others could see like we do with first discoveries, carriers & to a lesser extent (because they aren't persistent) our ships & Cmdr name. I'd like to be able to rename & change the appearance of my NPC ship & carrier crew, anything I get first discovery on, including stars & planets.

But I think that anything that isn't part of the procedural generation, any change that the game must remember (like first discoveries) takes up a lot of space on a lookup table rather than being able to be calculated locally from a seed as the overwhelming majority of the game is & I'm not convinced the benefit outweighs the cost.

Not far from my territory is a system called 59 Virginis, the home system of a PMF called Alchemy Den. The Earth-like and the station orbiting were renamed as a prize for (IIRC) a charity auction.

So it technically can be done, has been done (other systems & places have been renamed as memorials for celebrities too) but never in the sense that everyone gets to rename stuff.

In general I think allowing players to be able to add in their own unvetted content is a bad idea in a PEGI 7 game. It'd be funny for the first few minutes then half the names would just be a bunch of asterisks like we have with carrier names, and the other half would be the planetary equivalent of ubiquitous carriers called Babylon 5 or Battlestar Galactica. I've discovered tens of thousands of things. I just don't have that much of an imagination to name even a few of them something meaningful, nobody does (but I would enjoy the better ones).

As far as a memorial goes I feel your loss but ED already has a mechanism for adding those, and I am grateful FDev have had the good grace to offer that without restriction.

Fantastic credit sink.

Non-Landable moon with no locations = 10 billion credits
Landable moon or planet with no locations or signals = 20 billion
Landable planet with tenuous atmosphere & bio signals (no settlements) = 30 billion
ELW, WW, terraformable outside human space (no settlements) = 50 billion

Once purchased no name change allowed. It is absolutely permanent. No backsies or do-overs. Anything FDev consideres inappropriate gets x'd out, no refund, too bad, so sad. Choose carefully.

Make it ARX instead of CR and they can fund the game. Though 10B ARX is maybe too much. Maybe.

Perhaps a combination.

You buy a license to name x planets for Arx then pay credits to do the changes.

All names subject to vetting, we don’t need any thing like Earthy McEarthface or §#%*€@le

For comparison, 1 acre on the Moon currently costs about $35. 🤣

A whole planet in Elite is easily the better deal.
The moon is a scam*, whereas a planet in the elite verse is yours (and others) to visit as long as the servers live .....

I've said before that it would be a good thing to do as a seasonal event, say, leading up to Christmas, with the renamed systems and bodies rolling out in the New Year or something. Set up a web portal where you can search for a system/body for availability and then purchase. With some reasonable naming conventions/restrictions I think it would prove very worthwhile. The question is, how much would a reasonable price be?
