SUGGESTION : Useful Camera

Hi everyone !

First of all, I normaly speak French. Sorry for my bad English if so.

I come here to suggest something very important that I didnt see in game yet. Why those big ships like the T9 Heavy (etc...) don't have a rear camera ? Elite Dangerous is in years 3000+ and I, into the year 2019, have a Ford Focus with a rear camera on it. It look funny when I tell the problem like this but when I far pass my parking into a station and I need to go backwards with my T9, it's a pain in the... wormhole. Seriously... There's come the wastes of time, the fines and those reparations just because we can't see in our back. Like nothing, yeah we cant see nothing.

Why not just a rear camera or something like that ? I'm sure we can do it. You know like a Buggati Veyron spoiler that come out with high speed ? Maybe the rear camera can come out like this when you go backwards ?

Well thank you for your time everyone, that was all my problem ! :geek:

I know what you mean. It would be nice to have. Unfortunately i remember from long time ago, that players were pushing for it. I don't have the postings at hand and am too lazy to search for it, so what i say is roughly out of memory. From how i remember it, FD even at some time said that it was a nice feature and they'd actually like to have it. But with the way the games engine is done, implementing it would double the GPU load and thus half the games frame rate. They have not found any way to implement this, which wouldn't break the game in terms of performance.

Mind you, that was some years ago. I'd still love it if they would come up with something like that. But also keep in mind that doing anything -useful- there is not easy. A simple "looks back" camera wouldn't do much good in space. You'd need a huge fisheye-style camera, which would basically display a 270° arc, leaving only your cockpit view open. So all in all, one could argue that it's actually the radars job to give you this information, while the camera would be mostly fluff.

I understand well, that rendering in both directions will double the CPU/GPU load. The game renders everything in front of the pilot (=camera), and would need to render everything behind the pilot/ship too, and if you have sort of a 'rear mirror' in your screen, it would need to do this permanently. So no 'rear mirror' screen.

On the other hand I am missing a fast method to look behind my ship. This would be a switch between looking forward and looking behind you, and therefore no additional load for the GPU. The problem with this solution is logic: Most ships have the pilots seat in front of them and are constructed so, that the entire ship is behind the pilot. It is quite logical, that the pilot is blind to his rear. Only a camera looking behind the ship would help - see above...

You cannot even turn your head around, since there is the bulk of your ship in the way. They could build something temporary, for example a screen/holo which obstructs the forward view as long as it is used, and gives the view behind the ship (in a limited way). A key could be configured to do this.

But I doubt that such a big change has a chance. The game is not actively developed at the moment (my impression), even maintenance and bug fixing is very slow...

Do something like how Subnautica does it with the Cyclops, with turreted external cameras. Essentially, move your viewpoint from the cockpit to looking out from the spine, belly, or rear of your ship.

YES.

a SIMPLE left, right, and rear camera view please. Like it was in the original BBC game

I've little/no use for the cinematic camera views currently on offer

@MoonRacer I think that I understand. But if it's possible to turn a live camera view from everywhere at anytime, why a simple rear camera that you will open sometime would increase the demand in performance CPU/GPU? It's a non sens for me. Rear camera is something logic when you need to drive in a close space station with a big ship... and it's something possible into this game! I wonder why this is not a think yet.

Please Frontier, just do it :)
