Suggestions for a returning vet

Hi all, it's been a long time since I really played but I recently decided to dust off the sticks and get back in the cockpit. However, I find myself at a loose end, and was hoping for some suggestions on what to do.

First up, bit of background for those who don't know - used to play Elite 2 waaaaaay back when and it was one of my favourite games. Got E:D in a sale and wasn't tremendously impressed back then, but I managed to breathe new life into it by exploring the galaxy and blogging about it. I've spent a LONG time flying round the galaxy (including a trip to sag-A* in my 25ly cobra) and have a ton of first discoveries on everything except wolf-rayett and black holes - Elite explorer rank in the bag, but in all honesty I think I've spent enough time in the black, and wanted to try some other styles of play.

I stopped playing around the time the Thargoids went hostile, I think just after FDEV released the new engineering system. The last thing I bought before I quit was a Federal Assault Ship which is pretty well kitted out - https://s.orbis.zone/81tI and can hold its own in the handful of combat missions (go to system x, scan the nav beacon, go to coordinates, kill the guy) that I have done and is pretty fun to fly. I briefly came back for that mission to beagle point recently but my heart wasn't in it.

So my question for you all is - what do you think I should do with my time? I don't want to do any more exploration, I'd rather focus on combat or trading (although I hear mining is a thing now, and there's other stuff that came in after I left or was just coming in as I left. Here's a couple of things that might help your suggestions:

Combat - I like it fast paced and I like dogfighting - not a huge fan of slow turning ships with loads of turrets, prefer something reasonably quick and nimble that can still pack a punch (that'#s why I got a FAS in the first place. Prefer to spend more time fighting than travelling to a fight. Probably more interested in gaining reputation than money too.

Trading - Prefer to do all my stuff in-game rather than using websites and stuff. Don't mind long distance haulage or short milk runs. Probably more interested in making money with this venture than rep, although both are nice

Mining - umm... I know nothing about it. is it less boring than mining in EVE?

I have about 300 million credits, and I'm not married to my FAS. Feel free to offer ship suggestions to go with your activity suggestions - my goal is always to maximise fun rather than to make the most money in the shortest space of time or be crowned king of the space jockeys or whatever.

I play in Solo, primarily because I have no friends, but feel free to tempt me into open if there's any benefits (note that I do not consider getting ganked by space-Joe Rogan in a FdL to be a benefit.

Thanks for reading, look forward to the suggestions

I’m also a recent returning cmdr, on Xbox, so I don’t recognize your tag, I’ve decided to try engineering for the first time.
ive not done mining either, and it sounds sploity so I won’t do the diamond rush.
one thing I remember having fun doing was going on rare goods trading circuits.

Any decent tips or starter guides you'd recommend? Or is it just a case of "find some rares and fly a long long way away"?
There are probably guides, sorry not much help, I don’t remember.
you can find a list of systems with rare goods and plan or follow a guide route with info on where to buy and sell goods for nice profit.
There is some risk since some goods are illegal in some systems, so you’ll need to act like a smuggler and make a quick entrance to stations to avoid scans.
All good fun, and helps quite a bit toward getting elite in trading.

I used this when I did a lot of rare trading to earn my first millions back in the day

The big things right now are mining and bulk trading tritium. People are grinding like mad for fleet carriers, but if you aren't interested in that you can mine/trade for a short while to buy whatever ship(s) you want. Earnings are insane now, you don't have to worry about the price of ships. You should really check out the Krait MkII and Mamba.

You might want to take a look at doing some engineering, the gains in the new system are far better at G5 than in the old system, unless you are rocking a bunch of god rolls.

Once you're all kitted out, the things to do haven't changed much.

1) NPC Combat(using nimble ships) : Try the DBX against small ships, and the FDL(iEagle too) , engineering them helps(Python isn't that slow either, best all round medium ship in game, combat/haul/mine).
2) Trading : The GalMap is broken and buggy when it comes to trade and traders. Use INARA, as it is what ED should have been in game .
3) Look up sub-surface Low Temperature Diamond mining. Good money to be made there(not the exploit, but legit mining)
4) OPEN : Outside hubs you meet no one, but when you do it is either "O7" or they gank you :D (play in solo)

Well, let me tell you what I did tonight. I picked up a couple of missions which sounded fun, massacre the infected ships. Fitted a frameshift interdictor and set off. Interdicted and destroyed a ton of ships from the faction but apparently they weren't the right ones. Found some mission specific signal sources, great! But they don't contain any of the ships I need, not even the correct faction. Do this for an hour or so and get frustrated so fly down to a planet and get a message daying "mission objective detected"! OK cool... except it was a lie. All that happened was I picked up a 500 credit fine for trespassing. In frustration I looked on the internet to see if there was a trick to this mission and it seems it's bugged. And has been bugged for over a year. OK fine, at least I can cash in my bounty and pay off my fine. So I dock and speak to the contact for paying off the fine. What's this? What's this whole new fine paying screen which seems overly complicated? I have to "purchase" a fine payment? Well, OK. Wait, now where the hell am I? I'm on the other side of the damn bubble from where I was.

Nope. I think I'm done. To be fair, I got my money's worth over the years, but I don't think I can come back now.

Fly safe commanders, maybe I'll se you in another game.

Oh dear, I shouldn't laugh but honestly that is really funny. You come back to an evolving game, you know there are loads of changes that you are not familiar with and suddenly it is the game's fault for you clicking on "Hand Yourself In" - funny as .....

I don't want any of your stuff...

I'm not blaming the game for the new mechanics. I do blame the game for the bugged missions though. If I hadn't spent hours trying to complete a mission that had been bugged for over a year and still in the game then I would probably be more forgiving. But I just wasn't having fun. I played the game for 500 hours, I got my money's worth. But there's plenty of other ways to spend my time. I guess this is the universe's way of saying "move on, Karl, go play X4".
