General / Off-Topic Suicide Squad Joker? What's up? (major controversy)

People have been moaning about this all over the place that I've seen. The internet doesn't want Ben Affleck as Batman, and also really doesn't seem to want Jared Leto as Joker.

Why?

Heath Ledger was a superb actor, his performance in Brokeback Mountain was awesome. But his Joker? With that silly voice and that terrible thing he did licking his lips? To me at least he came across as annoying rather than threatening. He seemed to be playing that poor sod at school that tended to get beat up a lot and because socially awkward as a result. Had he not died so young he probably wouldn't have had such praise heaped upon him for The Dark Knight.

Jack Nicholsen was a fun joker, but let's face facts he was getting on in years when he faced off against Batman. Would Batman be better off beating him up? Or stealing his bus pass and preventing him from moving around the city? A man wearing makeup has been seen stealing anti-arthritis medication? The caped crusader is on it!

Cesar Romero? Oh god don't even think of it.

But now we've got Jared Leto:

What he seems to be doing, which Ledger did not do, is playing the part with a sort of frenzied insanity not unlike Nux from Mad Max: Fury Road. He seems to be playing it as someone who loves and enjoys mayhem and chaos and death, not someone who wanders into a gang meeting to make a point and ask for half their money (what?!).

I am not alone in this view but I am part of a small minority if the internet noise is anything to go by. I am wondering what the opinion of people at this place is, given the demographic is a little older and wiser than most other places.

Sidenote: I think that they're cramming way too many characters into this movie for it to work, I think a Joker/Quinn movie alone would work much better, but I'm still pretty pumped for it. Anyone else?

Be honest, none of the dc stuff is exciting me.
:
Batman V's superman is a bit meh, might be surprised (hope to be surprised) but not expecting to be.
:
She suicide squad stuff similar. It feels as if dc are just trying to copy marvel's formula but are somehow missing the spark that makes the marvel stuff work.
:
As for heath ledgers joker, I've got to disagree, ok the lip licking is a bit off putting but he plays the madness much more controlled than a simple "I'm a nutter, look at me giggle". He's more of a cold psychopath for example like his pencil trick.
:
For my money, one of the most chilling bad guys in recent cinema is Anton Cigar(?) from No Country For Old Men. His unreadable merciless killer really was scary. For me heath ledger brought a touch of that to the role, which wSas a refreshing change, whilst leto's seems to be a meth head Jack Nicholson.
:
I wait to be proved wrong.
:
Yay for a joker/HQ movie tho...

I'm pretty pump for this movie. It looks awesome. I don't care about who plays the joker and DC have made a concerted effort in Gotham and other material to make it crystal clear that their isn't one joker around and that it more of a idea than a person.

It looks good.

But is it another Batman movie? Or have I picked it up wrong? To be honest, other than the first one with Nicholson, I haven't seen any others. I watched the first Superman because I had a major crush on him when he was played by George Reeves. I was heartbroken when he killed himself and never really believed it.

Hopefully Suicide Squad will come out on Amazon Prime pretty soon. Look forward to it there.

It'll be on the pictures in Aug 2016, so you've got a wait yet. According to RT Ben Affleck is in this movie but only as a bit part, so my guess is that Batman will show up briefly. If that hack Nolan has been hanging around the set again I'd put money on it being a flashback of some type. The guy can't help putting flashbacks all over everything he touches.

The movie isn't a Batman movie though, that's pretty clear. Suicide Squad is basically the DC universe villians getting together to fight against evil, in their own unique and deadly way.

Being someone who prefers villains to heroes I am looking forward to this one more than Batman vs Superman (which IS a Batman movie and will be out this year). Do NOT watch the trailers. Virtually the whole plot has already been given away in it.

They are trying to copy Marvels success, there is no doubt about that, but are they really not succeeding? The Age of Ultron was very anti-climactic I felt, Iron Man 3 was a bit pointless.

The pencil trick made me think of a Tarantino movie. I think you're right about him playing it controlled, and that was what made me really dislike it. The Joker was supposed to be played as someone who "just wants to watch the world burn", but went through the movie like a man with a carefully laid out plan. Indeed he DID seem to have carefully laid out plans. From Cracked:

JOKER:"First, we find two empty buildings. Without the cops noticing, we'll secretly sneak in hundreds of drums of explosive liquids, and wire all of them to explode. Next, we'll orchestrate an attack on the convoy transporting Harvey Dent. This will involve blocking busy streets, blowing police helicopters out of the air and launching missiles at the armored car. All of this will be done, not to kill Dent (though that could happen at any moment) but to cause Batman to intervene so that he will throw me in jail.

Then, while the whole town is on alert, we go ahead and have our henchmen kidnap both Dent and Rachel Dawes and strap them in with the bombs in the two abandoned buildings. Then I'll send Batman after one of them, knowing that this will result in Rachel being killed and Dent being a certain distance from the explosion as to become grotesquely injured and disillusioned. Then I'll blow up the jail without accidentally killing myself. Gentlemen, it couldn't be simpler."

And that's not even mentioning the getting all the explosives onto two boats during an evacuation, getting all these explosives into a hospital during an evacuation, etc.

For me it was Muse from Captain Phillips. I found myself watching that believing they'd actually gone and got Somali pirates to play the part of Somali pirates. That performance chewed me up and spat me out.
