Summarise silent running / engines&shields off

Just to chime in a bit, I have spent a little while doodling with silent running and such. It pretty much works like the youtube videos if the folks who did testing with each other.

Out of boredom I jumped into open play and ran over to gankport, parked about 3k from dock opening and shut everything down in modules and engaged silent running.

At first shutdown the ship reached 0%. After a few minutes I turned everything back on and coasted around aimlessly for a few when no one was around. I then repeated the same shutdown sequence and this time heat generation reached zero in the systems panel but the HUD displayed 1%. Turning on sub systems had no effect to heat signatur for me with the exception of turning drives or shields back on.

Best guess is that the 1% thing is some sort of bug.

The second time around a random lunatic arrived and swung around Freeport for 10-15 minutes attacking everyone entering and leaving. I noticed a few got past him as they must have pulled a full boost, sink drop and shutdown before they tore out of the station. I could see them visually but was unable to lock at my distance. I imagine if the distance were closer I may have been able to lock. Maybe not.

But anyway, after watching this commander who will remain anonymous for a good bit and having him zoom by me as close as 600m away from my viper I concluded that I was off radar and the only thing that would have revealed my position is if he accidentally ran into me.

Rather than have this happen I waited until he/she was busy trying to blow someone up, switched everything on, hit boost, dropped a sink, layed down some cannon fire on his ass and rammed his ship into oblivion.

The whole silent running thing appears to be rather niche. It has some usefulness but the complexities involved make it too much of a pain in the behind to really have a valid effect in combat.

I know I probably startled the griefer a bit. But short of getting lucky with the ram, he probably would have flipped around and wiped me out without much effort as my shields were nowhere near recharge.

How many heat sinks are in a dispencer?

Can you buy more than one dispencer? If so will the bound key continue to work, simply starting to use the second unit after the first is empty?

Yes I think you can fit more than one, but I think they both operate at the same time so it costs 2 sinks when you use the release once but if I remember correctly you get a pretty big decrease in heat build up using 2.

Well one heatsink takes me down to about 20% temp, so goodness knows what two would do :)

I guess, you'd need to assign them to different fire buttons/groups then to work them individually? Sounds very painful.

Can you recall (roughly) how many heatsinks one unit contains?
