Summary for 'On the Horizon – Countdown to The Engineers Beta Livestream: Part 2'

What I found a little mindblowing was that they quoted some figures.

75,000 populated systems.

Averaging 6 factions per system.

So 450,000 factions.

Deos this mean 450,000 procedurally generated faction representatives with avatars?

If so...
Yes, but your math is off. There will likely be over 1,000,000 viewable NPC in 2.1 as each faction has a variety of representatives depending on your rank and rep (450,000 factions x N reps per faction).

MB confirmed this on the forums some weeks ago. I had heard various numbers as low as 9,000 and as high as 'millions', although and haven't taken the time to go back and find MB's original confirmation, I think it was in response to one of the higher numbers.

The example NPC are cool and it will be interesting to see how successfully the system avoids "clones" like many games with crowds or swarms of NPC had just a few years back.

One thing I don't think we have seen yet is facial hair. Surely MB will require that be included?

Difficulty Level: Now tied to your ranks and you won't be seeing Eagles and Sidewinders at Elite. A lot of us are gonna love this, and a lot are going to be screaming bloody murder on the forums. I welcome the Anaconda and Vette interdictions. More money! ;)

Hidden Goodies in the Beta: Challenge accepted! :)
I like to think I'm decent at combat but I think the new AI is going to hand me a smackdown. We'll see.

The mention of easter egg type missions was intriguing for sure.

For anyone not following the Formadine Rift/ Children of Raxxla/ Salome threads, also know there is a mystery that has been in the game since forever, that the players still have not found/ figured out.

It seems to be getting more hints from someone at FD roleplaying in the game so maybe they are nearing completion of some new assets and cool stuff.

I am *very* chuffed that one of my questions got answered! It is a shame that Chained Missions won't be making an appearance in 2.1, but it does sound like something approaching my vision of Branched Missions will be included! I do hope they have fixed the bugged missions brought in back in 2.0/1.5!

On the one hand I am beyond hyped for this huge upgrade to our game, on the other hand I am really really worried about the amount of bugs we might find.

Docking clamps released. Summary-Drive Engaged!

  • No exploration missions yet but they are planned.

Disappointed but I get the feeling the exploration missions will be part of the passenger update. Taking passengers on sight seeing tours sounds more like it would count towards your exploration rank.

That line confused me, we already have chained missions since 1.5/2.0?!

They aren't fully chained though. Just 4 missions of the same type, linked together. A truly Chained Mission would involve variable numbers of missions-potentially all of different types-all linked together. A fully chained mission might be called "help us solve the mystery of the missing pilot"-and might consist of a salvage mission (black box recovery), a hostage rescue mission, then an assassination mission. Each mission requiring you to go to a settlement/outpost/station in between. Hope that clarifies things.

Brilliant summary, thanks a million, a single +1 rep seems grossly inadequate reward!

P.S. re: missile splash damage canopy breach - they did say that effect had been removed since that video was made (shame really - I like the idea of missiles causing a canopy breach).

The 2.1 i[date should've been called "Missions" :)
I'm cautiously optimistic. It seems Frontier has understood that there needs to be more motivation to actually play the game, as well as more variation to the activities themselves.

Enemy Ships should be closer in rank to you for missions. So, for assassination missions, if you're Mostly Harmless you won't be fighting an Elite Condy.

But does't this mean that it will be harder to rank up?

Yes and no.
He said 75.000 minor Factions, and each faction has 6 representatives. So yes, there are 450.000 representatives :)

there shoukdnt be a problem if your actual skill level matched your rank. Grinders might be annoyed though. Improved AI will also slow you down.
