Proposal Discussion Summon help via distress signal

I've been playing the demon/dark souls games and I really love how they've implemented the multiplayer game within your solo game. I think Elite lands itself to be in implemented in a similar fashion.

It would be cool if you can somehow summon players to your help you via the distress signal.

In Dark Souls you can enter into a covenant. Some are good, some are evil, some are in-between. Some are geared towards co-op, some are geared towards challenging other players in PvP, some are geared towards invading those that have attacked other players.
Maybe Elite can have groups like these that you can join, like local militia, enforcement, smugglers, bounty hunters, thieves, pirates, killeveryone etc.

Also in Dark souls series you either leave summon signals or wear a ring of the covenant to be summoned.

For example as a member of a 'good' covenant you can leave summon signs for players needing help to pass a dangerous boss, or pass a forest where other multiplayers tries to prevent passage. Those that guard the forest would be automatically summoned by wearing a certain ring whenever someone tries to trespass.

So right now with the instancing on different servers it's hard to get help when in need.

So lets say you belong to a "Defenders of Universe United" group/faction, you name it. By belonging to this group you've agreed to be summoned (wear a pager :) )when you are online. You also should be able to switch off the summoning off or leave the group at any time (with consequences).

So if you are online on a different server and you see a flashing red distress signal ((from a different server but still within your lightyears jump limit)) you respond to it. A poor soul in a hauler, trying to feed his family, is being harassed by a pirate, the ED system hyperspace you (maybe several more ships) to the same location/server as the person in need. Then tables are turned and maybe the attacking pirate belongs to "We Do Not Sow" group and they summon help from their group. The poor soul in the Hauler, if he has survived the initial attack, sneaks out while the other parties that like to bang proceed to their PvP combat.

Just an idea.

Well I am not sure about the being summoned aspect of things.

But I would certainly be for spotting Distress Signals, whether it be whilst Super-cruising (similar to spotting Unidentified Signal Sources, but here they would be Unidentified Distress beacon or similar), and/or through an alternative filter on the galaxy map and/or a comms channel you can turn on or off to listen out for distress signals (like listening in on the Police response chatter).

It's been suggested. By me, others, and even Abraham Lincoln, would you believe it. Good guy.

It's also been noted this wouldn't necessarily mean "help." Activating your beacon in local space would allow other pilots in supercruise to see a signal from relatively far away. It might be a pilot in trouble willing to pay their rescuers...or it might be someone setting a trap.

The distress beacon needs fleshing out, to be sure, although i wouldn't agree on the extent that you're proposing.

I'd be content if it merely open a USS and hailed an npc that can either refuel or repair the ship for you.
Triple A in space.
Being forced to suicide because of a blown out engine isn't much fun.

Ofcourse, that would also open you up for the more shady characters out there to exploit, if they desire.
