Ok, so I have an idea for the devs to consider for a future date and would welcome open discussion with the community.
I have been playing the Beta with friends and whilst the galaxy was small, it was great, we would meet up and fly off trading etc... but now the galaxy is a vast lonely place, where being able to meet up with friend for a bit of smuggling and pirating fun isn’t as easy as it was, because of the distances required to travel to meet up. Most of us would be lucky to find a friend in one night for some ad-hoc gaming.
Now I would never suggest anything like the Warcraft fast travel system they use for dungeons etc... but would prefer to voice a more immersive concept.
It would be nice if there were a number of super-carrier style ships a Commander can dock with in a sector space that can, for a price, traverse larger distances of space between 2 defined locations, essentially a Commander can request to dock with this ship, and purchase passage on it; a timer will appear and a jump counter and the pilot will have to undock when the destination is reached, if you fail to undock for some reason, be it AFK or you have logged off the Ship will automatically jettison you at your location but this will come with a fine against the faction the carrier belongs to (Fed, Imperial etc.).
All of this could happen in real time, the only difference is this “Super Carrier” has the ability to jump further than any production line ship a commander can purchase. These ships would be at stations for 25 minutes (or other timeframe) and then jump to their intended destination. Travel time could be say 10 minutes to arrive at its destination, a round trip to the carrier would therefore be 1 hour. The fee could be ship size/distance dependent.
This will give Commanders some additional ability to meet up in space at set destinations to allow those people that want to spend time with their friends in the galaxy to do so relatively more quickly, without having to spend multiple hours or even days, trying to meet each other.
Please keep in mind, I’m not saying that every station/system in the game should have this and different factions would likely have different central hubs,, or maybe at a core system in the galaxy/sector, so if you wanted to get passage on one of these ships you still might need to jump 50ly to get to the nearest Super Carrier to get passage but the Ship will travel 400ly in a smaller fraction of time than it would take me in my Cobra. If however you wanted a different location, you would need to return the central hub region.
Think of it like this, I wouldn't drive from Britain to America, I would travel to the airport and get a flight.
