Super-charging the Adder - the unsuspecting courier

I got a lot of love for the Adder, It's the first true multi-role ship of the game and it was the ship that made Elite Dangerous feel like Elite for me.
Miner, trader, explorer, fighter, she can do it all!!! Plus it's got a cup holder. That counts for a lot :)

She's got Great Agility, good jump range. (Now if only Frontier saw fit to put the chair actually CLOSE to the dashboard, we are like a 1.5m maybe even 2 meters away and we see are forced to see more cockpit than space, but they had to nerf this ship somehow)

If Engineer modded - she could make a great Courier.
The modded iCourier and eagle's are up in the 800/900kms, the Adder is in the same Agility, and percent slower.
How fast can you get an an Adder to go?


Now don't get me wrong, this is no replacement of the iCourier - on paper that ship has better base stats to mod from and of all the ships of Elite it's got the term Courier in it's name. That Sort of gives the game away of which ship is the true courier. It's got 3 class 2 weapons (adder has 1xClass2 and 2xclass1). iCourier has on more internal module slot.

But I get my Millenium Falcon 'what a piece of junk' kicks out of the unsuspecting Adder (she might not look like much, but she's got it where it counts kid. I made a lot of special modifications myself!)

I ran a long-jump set-up, and with a "fairly" decent roll from Grade5 FSD from Farseer, I got 40ly (no Picture evidence sorry).
But at the cost of boosting and recharging. (low mass power distributer, generator class2A Shields). This is running with the Enhanced Engines btw.
I got vapourised by another player with their opening volley's with his Overcharged FSD - I had to laugh out loud. I couldn't run or anything.
Lessoned learned. Large jump range != courier material.
When the 2.2 comes online, I'll get an uber-strip down Adder and transfer over the FSD. My hunch says I'll get 42ly out of that build.

This is where I am at.

Distributor modded Engine focused Grade2 (can't bloody find the Electro Chemcal arrays to make it to grade3 which would recharge the thrusters practically before the boost runs out ).
FSD Grade 5 (decent roll).
Enhanced Thrusters 3A Grade3(Secondary effect buried the multiplier needle - So can't get better.....than a KwickFit Fitter)

However hitting the mailbox full thrust (no boost) at Standard laden Cobra boosting levels is a little nerve racking.
Prangs and snags *do* happen so prefer to run with shields thankyouverymuchladiesandgentlemen.

Without the Grade3 Distributor and an empty hold, I can't physically reach those "top" speeds. Apparently I have to move nano-breakers, and cooling hoses everywhere :)
I am running with chaff and heat-sinks, (whose combined weight also degrades the FSD considerably)
A 3A fuel scoop and half the standard size fuel tank - Because I'm in the bubble and scooping takes less time, there should always be station near-by.

Even with this set up I can keep behind a the six of an NPC Sidewinder but I'm not combat capable.

Adding weapons also degrades the jump and thruster performance considerably.
I even had a shield booster for a while but again, degrades speed and jump, and that degraded my ability to stay behind ships.
These light ships are so bloody sensitive :/

So my idea of the courier is to run with :
heavy shields (for the odd prang or good weapons fire hit).
no weapons
1 Chaff, (keep those weapons from geting a beat, I'll load up the heat sink for the odd smuggling mission when needed)
Grade5 FSD
Grade5 Thrusters
Grade3 Power-Distributor (engine focused) vs Grade5 Charge Enhanced Power Distributor

So according to the excel spreadsheets, I got my work cut out for me to get those Grade5 Thruster from Palin.
First I need Elvira to Inform me of Quint THEN get to him with a Sirius Permit (*sniff*)

And what is the usefullness of a 30ly Uber fast Adder at the end of it all? Not much! Just satisfying my affections for the old girl.

With the small ships, you can't stack high-pay smuggling runs like you could with an ASP.
Well I could carry grade3 and grade2 bulk passengers, if only VIP's traveled incognito!!!.
And again iCourier has a module slot more than the adder making it the prefered place to put all this engineering effort :)

With the Dolphin comming in, you got to wonder if it will be the same slow moving tank mentality of the Beluga and Orca, where those enhanced thrusters just keep the thing moving relatively okay with the heavy mass nerf of such a small ship.

I never understood that optimal mass thingy :D

But That's my dilema Speed vs durability.
10% may means a lot when hitting the ground or the docking ring at Plaid speeds - so i noticed :)
it might be the thing that helps you surving a strole through a Combat Zone.
I'm flying for comfort ;)

Shield boosters ontop of that. 120mj and double Modded shield boosters ontop of that, actually isn't viable with an Enhanced Engine, whose power draw is 48%,
but bye bye that speed and jump range that make a good courier with a tank build.

You can kit out an adder to be as tough as nails.

But with regards to say range, speed and price, the cobra does a better job even if it's lightly stocked on shields and armour.
So trying to make something "practical" with these small ships, is a bit silly. I've tried doing a bit of math on the subject.
As I said I'm doing it for the love.

So keeping it light and manourverable is the way to go, although, you are a leaf on the wind....
And what sort of shield, standard, prismatic, bi-weave?
No shields and heavy armour?
Once I don't need to lug commodities around, I'll invite some people online and make some suicide runs (at them/into them) to test the full boost light shield and shieldless builds.

The only other avenue is the Advanced 2A thrusters vs the 3A enhanced thrusters. (modded of course).
When the 2.2 module transfer comes online I'll do a cross-check and comparison, or just buy a second adder at Garay ;) It's more the time factor :D
I'm concentrating on those unlocks right now. Might focus on my newly aqcuired python (thanks to the Moria CG) with the leveling.

Lmao, is that an actual Adder paint job that makes it look like the Planet Express ship?
Sadly it's just photoshop. There is a green colour in the vibrant pack for the adder, but it lacks the red trim. Adder just seems perfect though with it's general overbite 50's styling look and the fact that it can mount a turret on top right where it is on the planet express.

It really is the perfect ship for it, you're right. The overall ship, cockpit design, the upper wings.

It's the only ship that gives me the Millenium Falcon vibes ! :D

I got the G4 Enhanced drive and I'm desperatly looking for the Phamaceutical Isolator to get a good roll of G5 ! The grind to Palin was not fun though.

And with multi-crew that second seat.
All the guns are situated at the back, if turreted and 100% controllable like the gunners view in I-war.....
That means any ship on your six might get seriously rouge cheeks, with some hard slaps. I wouldn't go as far as a nose bleed :D
Although running with the mines was fun - for a while.

I'm at work right now but I think I didn't get such a good roll because I don't remember getting much better speed than you have now...

Thing is you only get max 4% increase from G4 to G5 with a lot of thermal load. I'm keeping G4 on my Clipper right now because I'm pretty sure it will melt with G5.

486 m/s boost speed unladen (with clean drive tuning L5 on enhanced performance thrusters), around 430 m/s laden (16 T cargo). i rarely fly it, cause courier, and an engineered DBE + cobra mkIII (cobra and DBE can take additional mass much better in terms of speed or jumprange). i earned my first exploration AspE by exploring in an Adder, and couldn't sell that ship ever. it is called Marvin, and has a depressing paintjob :D

Why would you take Clean drive ? What other engineered module do you run ?

i took clean drive, because i wanted to take my adder out exploring at some point again. explonda with 6A thrusters + clean drive tuning: can highwake from neutron star/black hole without overheating. DBE with 4A thrsuters and dirty drive tuning: does overheat now if highwaking from a black hole or neutron star. the enhanced thrusters are already producing a lot of heat (through powerconsumption) without modding.

other engineered moduls: ENG focussed powerdistributor, small longrange beam turret, small rapid fire missile rack, overcharged MC

--- those are not good rolls from other ships (e.g. transferred moduls). if i would max my adder, i would probably go with a focussed medium pulse turret, a small cannon and a small missile rack....
 
I lol'd to the bit about the seat/cockpit placement ... I was working on a PvP Adder for a while ... aside from the shield strength, the seat was the next biggest issue cuz VR.

I didn't understand the difference between a clean and dirty drive!!

Nice mod even if I do say so myself.

I took my adder out for a jaunt to maia and beyond, back in the begining of 2.0 with a Srv as well.
I acquired quite a stockpile of materials in that trip.

That adder look so pitiful and fragile against those harsh planets(and it was as so far away from the bubble it-was), but still it harboured more protection than the Scarab.
It physically gave me an odd-chill of "wow" deep space thoughts, then I realised I was playing a game :D
But that trip (and Obsidianant's video's) made me put together an explorer-asp during the spring and then I went for Jacques.

I go 1/14th of the way, and thought to myself, it wasn't as exciting as the time I took my adder out, as that "fear" factor was gone.
So I turned around and did the Soothis / Ceos thing (but the proper way,not the re-logging exploit).



Yeah, I had tooled up my Adder with weaponry as well, and was modding them, but when I finally stumbled over the enhanced drive, I shed my beam laser and shield booster (due to power constraints) and noticed i got a massive leap in jump range and thruster capacity, even on a Grade2 Thrusters, and opted to go crazy for speed and range.

I would argue that a multipurpose/can't decide ship should get light weight weapon mounts. A tier 4 medium pulse laser turret can weigh as little as .5 tons, tier 5 light small multicanons as little as 0.2 tons each. Very worth it.

Though I'd put a medium pulse turret on the Adder's top mount and two seeker missiles in the bottom for that Planet Express feel. For practical purposes, a gimballed or fixed top mount because the adder is very maneuverable anyways, doesn't need a turret.

Yes - the Adder and the iCourier are the only two ships in the game (due to low hull mass) fully able to take advantage of the intoxicating Enhanced + Dirty Drives combo. To really experience it to the full, all mass needs to be shaved wherever possible. It's even possible to get reduced mass secondaries on most things (without a lightweight mod) with enough rolls.
