Super Cruise boost control.

I would love to see the super cruise boost have levels or stages simular to a modern jets afterburner stages.
Activating the boost button gets you 25%, holding the button will increase the power in increments of 25% to 100%.

Pressing and releasing the button again will disengage the boost, but pressing and holding the button decrease the level of boost in 25% increments.

This would add more depth and controlability to the already excellent idea of the SCO boost.

I thought the throttle worked to moderate SCO.

I realize that, the sad truth is that I don't use the old ships nowadays. I generally only fly medium ships and there is no incentive to fly anything else but the new ships.

For instance, I went on a rares run the other day and my destination was 500k out, if I had my Krait I would have gone elsewhere, but with the T-8, I hit boost and away I went, even though I was low on fuel.

The SCO really has been a game changer, it's just too bad the old ships are now obsolete or at least much less fun to fly. I don't know how many times I dropped into a system and my destination was 100k or more out and I didn't care. No more wasted time like before. Being able to boost between signal sources that are 30k+ is great.

Hmm. I still fly the DBX because I love the cockpit. I still fly the Courier because ... well, it's cool. I still hate the large ships.

I was out in the middle of nowhere in a Mandalay which is great, but I can absolutely guarantee I will still choose the DBX and the Phantom for other trips.

Not because of the stats or which is "best". They're pretty irrelevant to me. Which I guess is my point.

I also have never cared for which is best, the Diamondbacks were favorites, I run the Keelie for deep core mining with prospectors only, the FAS is one of my favorite ships, hands down.

But the Diamondbacks were slowly replaced by the Phantom because, as a mission runner, it's hands down better with very good range.

The Krait 2 is a better overall fighter than the FAS, particularly when fighting the goids, but I still found uses for the FAS.

But the new ships are just more useful. The Mandy handles so beautifully, has very good cargo space, jump range and is a great mission runner. Last night I took a T-8 out for deep core mining, she won't get into the spaces the Keelie can, but she handles so well she's a joy to fly. The Python 2 is an awesome fighter and and I love to interdict ships with her. All these, combined with the ability to laugh off long distances due to the SCO really makes me not want to use any other ships.

Like you, I disdain large ships, I only have the T-10, which I use for laser mining. The new ships are just much more usable for my day to day gameplay.

I was in my Mamba with the pre-engineered SCO drive, it worked out pretty well but I do agree that at some point there will have to be a retrofit for the older ships to make them a bit more controllable and fuel efficient to prevent the older ships from being 2nd class. I would hope that there's a large ship coming to the game sometime this year and once/if that happens a little while after there will be a lore breakthrough that upgrades all hulls to be SCO reinforced, or maybe an extra experimental engineering effect?

That's the hope, but as long a ship presales funds the game I won't hold my breath... I think an experimental effect the you can choose for instead of mass manager is likely, but if it can't be stacked with an existing effect it will likely cause some ships to be forgotten. For instance, if the ship runs hot and I can't add-on extra thermal management.

The other issue with new ships is how much better they are in things like supercruise handling makes them so much more desirable than the older ships.

That's a matter of your personal opinion, it's not a fact. I still prefer the "older ships", as the "new ships" are only useful for me in niche circumstances. I'm sure there are others who see it that way, but I'll never react as though my way is the only way. That way of thinking isn't conducive to a proper discussion.

First of all, I wasn't inferring that you should play the game my way, what I was saying for most use cases, they are better for me. However you want to play, go for it.

It's not opinion, there are a few ships such as the Phantom, which handle as well as the new ships in supercruise for instance, but lackong proper SCO flight characteristics, are inferior to the new ships and add greatly to the game.

And there are cases where running, say a Krait 2 or a Python 1 would make sense over a T-8 or Mandalay because of better offensive weapons loadout.

I say, all in good time, FDev should offer a Hull up-grade, akin to 'Lightweight Alloy', that will improve a ship's reaction to SCO. Some Hull options are quite expensive, and an SCO up-grade should be too. This wouldn't need to get those pesky Engineers involved, and I believe make a bit of lore-sense.

Recycle/Reuse those old ships, for those that are nostalgic.

There's a major storyline currently on hold - the Sirius company and LYR won't take the way they're losing business to Achilles Aerospace's SCO drive for very long.

FD will address that plot line sooner or later and how that's resolved will probably determine the fate of our legacy FSD drives.

I don't really have an issue with heat, fuel or how they affect the flight of older ships. I do have to keep an eye on things in ships like my Clipper, but standard rules of keeping your eyes on the dials and acting accordingly apply.

I'd like to think that there will be some kind of upgrade CG though. Unless FDev want to build an extra a whole bunch ships to replace the SCO unoptimised ones, which seems a little wasteful to me because I can't be the only player who sees ships like T-8 as nice, but the loss of weapons being too much of a compromise just for slightly (IMO) improved SCO flight.

Or maybe it's just me that thinks like that.

Whether the T-8 has a loss of weapons depends on what you compare it too, it has more than the T-7.
