Newcomer / Intro Super Cruise not disengaging and difficulty grouping with friends

Hello everyone. New pilot here.

I have two problems that I am hoping someone can help me with.

  1. I am unable to disengage Super Cruise even though both my Distance and Speed bars are in the blue as I approach the targeted station I wish to dock at while the "Safe Disengage Ready" notification is up on my HUD. I press "J" but nothing happens. I continue to travel at 30 km/s.
  2. When I try to group with other people, we don't see each other grouped together even though we are all on each others friends and groups list. Sometimes we'll see each other in the group list in game but not in game even though we are in space outside the same space station in the same system.

Group lists are for setting up effectively private servers, they have no effect in Open Play, and neither Group nor Friend lists guarantee you'll be out in the same instance.
Unless you are talking about Wings..?

As for supercruise, check your keybinds? I changed mine long ago, but there are a couple of different buttons bindable.

Only thing I can suggest is to check in Options/Controls/Flight Miscellaneous to make sure 'J' is bound only to "Enable Frame Shift Drive", and not also to "Enable Frame Shift Drive To Supercruise". But that's a bit of a shot in the dark ...

Thank you Razorwire and wiblfibl. Changing the keybind to "Enable Frame Shift Drive" worked perfectly.

As for the grouping issue, perhaps some additional information is required.
  1. Currently, I'm either playing solo just to get a hang of ED or group up with my sons.
  2. When I group, I play with my both of my sons so that we can play together alone in the universe until such time we are proficient in our piloting skills where we want to play in an "Open" universe.
  3. We have each other on each other's friend's list.
  4. When we form a group, there are times when we don't see each other even if we are at the same station hovering in space. I realize that we might be in different instances but can't seem to be able to find a way for all of us to play in the same instance.
  5. I'm not familiar with how to group up under the same Wing, what is the purpose of Wings for a group of three (my two sons and me) and whether my problem can be addressed by being in a Wing.
