supercruise gears

I love supercruise - even the long hauls . It's the perfect realtime / multiplayer rendition of the stardreamer tech from the 2nd & 3rd game.

Only thing that throws me is as the gauge for speed changes in relation to your proximity to how close you are to a celestial body's gravity well , it's hard to get a grip on how fast to go.

I know there's the 7 secs option & staying in the blue bar - but I do find myself overshooting a lot. Especially in relation to USS-

My suggestion then is can you have essentially 5 gears for supercruise?
A marking on the right hand gauge that gives a similar velocity to the
>, >>, >>>, >>>> & >>>>> star dreamer settings from the previous games. It's nice to give the drive a little squirt of power once you've gawked at the planet but more often than not this results in the dreaded 'slow down' warning. Having a gauge of the five speed levels would allow for better control.

It would be cool to just have those five gear speed presets and the option to use your velocity controls like a tiptronic gear stick too

Having that sort flight control would bring the cruise element to supercruise & definitely be super: )

The idea of Gears would be quite nice, although I'd probably suggest having 8 - 10 would be much better; especially given the Max Speed is 1000c, meaning it could easily be inline with the Star Trek (TOS) Warp Scale; i.e.
Frame Shift 1 = Sub-Light, 2 = 0.1c (30Mm) - 8c, 3 = 27c, 4 = 64c, 5 = 125c, 6 = 216c, 7 = 343c, 8 = 512c, 9 = 729c, 10 = 1,000c
.
In this respect you could then better handle the acceleration and deceleration similar to how Sub-Light works per Gear, there could obviously be some overlap (sweet speed spot) that if you go down too quickly could increase heat levels with the possibility of kicked you out of FSD. If it was a Semi-Auto, this would mean leaving it on Automatic it would work like it does now with you setting a relative acceleration (like Cruise Control in a Car) while you should be able to flip out of it if you want for Manual Flight; heck this could also be added as the (Semi)-'Autopilot' (Cruise Control) feature that could be removed for those looking to free up a couple of tonnes.
.
Not something necessary of course, but would be cool to see added.
