Supercruise - i am lovin it!

Kenny, Kenny...you were doing so well with trying to stay positive... :p

Personally I really like SC, but sure, improvements can always be made. Why do you assume they don't agree? As the game evolves I'm sure there will be plenty of improvements to all aspects of the game, supercruise included.

Have they touched supercruise at all (the flight mechanics not networking exit/enter) in the last 3 - 4 months?
Is there a clear and accurate representation of when to slow down?
Would you consider holding the throttle in the blue pretty much (other than some steering) an autopilot?
Do you think we have any significant control over the rate of acceleration and deceleration?
Are there any indications about how much mass is affecting our drives? How much mass is nearby or in the line of our current trajectory and how it will impact out vector?

I'm not negative.. I'm a realist. They haven't done any work other than the entry/exit for a long time. Until I see something official it is exactly what they wanted. Which is sad because it really needs some love.

More braking power and faster acceleration in deep space would be really nice. Otherwise I love slinging around planets and stars at high speeds, just because it's real purdy.

It is good.. it just needs more responsiveness and hud indicators about mass, and optimal approach points etc. Something any computer of the future would be able to do.

In the beginning it took a bit getting use to but once I got the hang of it, it's really interesting and fun mechanism to use. I just wish the blue section on the speed was a bit more accurate. Its seems to be somewhat easy to over shoot the location, keeping it at the lower section you start decelerating to early. Keeping it in the middle is a hit or miss as well, if anyone has some tips, wouldn't mind hearing them.

It aint hard. Nobody said that. Its just annoying... and a lot of us try to get to where we are going as FAST as possible and there is no way to push the envelope and tell if you are going too fast or too slow other than SOUND.

SC:
  • Why do my engines need to be maxxed to enter SC?
  • If I have four pips to engines, why do the engines still need to be maxxed and not just going as quick as three pips will allow?
  • It's too long to charge engines followed by a counter just to get it going.
  • It's too slow to accelerate.
  • Without warning, sometimes, it will accelerate way past your speed indicator and become completely uncontrollable*.
  • It's too slow to decelerate when approaching your target, especially when trying to get to an Unidentified Signal Source.
  • Its method of acceleration and deceleration is cumbersome and lacks any real control by the pilot. These seem to be primarily governed by your target's distance, which involves a lot of turning around when switching targets in mid-flight.
  • I like the animation going into SC, but the exit is still fugly.

*I think this has something to do with climbing out of gravity wells, the ship breaking free and the SC computer not compensating.
But, surely if the SC computer can tell how fast it needs to be going to get me from A to B and figure out a safe speed to drop out and has access to sensors which show the planetary bodies it could also maintain a balanced speed when it leaves a gravity well and just adhere to the speed setting the pilot has selected. Bah, humbug!!
(don't tell me it's called "flying" and I need to compensate - there's no warning of sudden exit from a gravity well - if you hear the engines accelerate it's too late).

You just don't got the hang of it.
Acceleration is only slow near gravity sources. Once you are in Deep Space, you accelerate much faster.
Keep your ETA time to 0:07 Minutes and you won't overshoot anymore. When your ETA is higher, go full throttle.
When your ETA is sinking to 0:09 0:08 0:07 throttle at the lower range just below the blue speed indicator bar.
Now you should be right till you get 1000 km to your destination where you can now leave Super Cruise.

I like the system a lot, because it is no pure autopilot (but assisted) and you feel bound to the laws of physics,
as your possible speed is influenced by the masses of stars and planets. This way the universe feels somewhat real.

Super Cruise is amazing. By far one of my favorite parts of the game.

It's like having an actual Alcubierre Drive to just play with, hurtling through solar system at FTL speeds. It's literally a life long dream come true for me.

Watching your speed shoot to to 100c, seeing microscopic pinpoints swell into full sized planets and moons, surfing suns at .5c to scoop fuel, gravity braking as you swing by a planet, diving headlong into planetary rings or atmospheres, looking over you shoulder to avoid interdiction in unsafe systems.

It's just perfect.

Here's a thought - where do such small ships get the power to travel like that from? And what kind of fuel is used for this propulsion? I can understand an Anaconda - but a sidewinder? In Sci-Fi lore, those are the types of ships that generally operate from carriers / mother ships / bases and aren't long range fighters. I actually would have liked jumpgates between systems.

I like supercruise overall. I think it's clever. I just wish the last 30 seconds or so of it wasn't so tedious. they should let us drop out of SC at much higher speeds imo

The only real issue I have with supercruise is when you have a binary star system and have to fly to a planet in the companion star's system, you somtime have a huge distance to travel. Alpha centauri is one that springs to mind, a full hour and a half at supercruise to traverse the system is totally boring. If you were able to warp directly to the companion star it would shorten the travel time enormously.

IN theory yes it is good. It is good to get around somewhat quickly considering the real times it would take.

In delivery... it still needs a lot of work and I'm afraid they don't agree.

Actually, in delivery, it does work, and it's you who doesn't agree. It's working exactly as intended.

I find supercruise easy and boring, and generally way too long.
I'd appreciate higher acceleration and deceleration rates, and maybe bigger gravity wells to actually make it require some skill to be efficient, as opposed to flying in straight lines hitting 75 throttle at 7 seconds.

Supercruise in general is fine, but, as some others already said, being able to accelerate/decelerate faster would be a huge plus. As it stands, supercruise and especially USS make reading the forum a requirement to avoid being bored out of one's mind.

That depends on your attention span.

That depends on your attention span.

The game does need to cater to a playerbase with a variety of attention spans, though... ;)

I was kind of sad to see the FSD-as-a-group idea get nixed. Cargo ships with escorts... players acting as teams... :(
