Newcomer / Intro Supercruise question

When I'm travelling by supercruise to a distant station (e.g. 100,000 Ls +) my ship gradually increases to about 500 c then starts decreasing in speed when I'm about half way to the destination. At first, I thought this was some kind of 'autopilot' deceleration, but I've realised that the same thing happens even if I switch targets. So why does this deceleration happen? Is it down to the large mass near the station causing my maximum supercruise speed to be reduced?

Thanks,

Corrrect. The gravitational pull of large masses will cause speed to fluctuate. i tend to find that when you get near large masses, i alter my course slightley away from the mass to keep my speed up.

Hope this helps

Ok, thanks for the clarification.

I guess that also means that the devs could - if they chose - tweak travel times by tweaking whatever value they use to represent the gravitational effect. Or they could include new engine types that aren't so greatly affected by gravity. Come to think of it, do such engines already exist (as you can see, I'm pretty new to this game)?
