Supernova

Not a bad thought, could use a bit more work to polish it up before submitting to development.
I'll agree that coding for a supernova anywhere in the sandbox would be a challenging thing and expectation of stumbling on one while in progress would be low odds. Surviving such a thing < shrug > something to be pondered. Mayhap a bit of coding to give " STELLAR EVENT DETECTED.. WARNING.. WARNING " on the hud?

Perhaps there might be a stellar research mission that eventually would lead to a one time event, if the game survives that long.

Even if Eta Carinae were to explode now -- today -- we wouldn't be able to register it as happening until 7,500 years from now. Which means Earthlings won't be seeing that explosion until November 13, 9517.

This would create a hell of a paradox in the game.

I don't believe that was the intent altho my wit is not as sharp as yours.

Using the Eta Carinae example I write about.. The Commander's ship would need to be 6,214 LY away from Sol, Earth and heading toward Eta Carinae for the discrepancy to register. And it would be registering as an anomaly by the ship's computer if I'm to assume that the Galactic Map on the ship is remotely interactive between its records and what it can "see" with scanners).

Not to mention I have found other commanders names on planets and stars out there (thanks to ESDM) and they were there within the last couple of years (Eta Carinae is considered a "tourist spot" in the game; much like Barnard's Loop, etc).

I personally have no idea what a stellar even like that would have on a ship's FSD; as I'm not entirely convinced the EMP or Gamma (or X-Ray) Burst wouldn't be knocking it and a slew of other components out on the ship as well -- making it impossible to emergency warp out to Witchspace.

It might happen later on, sure. Anything's possible.

The Bubble Nebula seems to be a case of what we have been talking about. I was recently there to explore. I found it while scrolling the map one day and said “Imma go there.” So I did. Interestingly the size and shape would suggest that it is the remnants of a supernova. This is what got me thinking about all these things.

Everything is simple:

GalNet to have one more line - "Space events" (or smth like that); some observatory from the system/nebula/distant corner reports rising instability of 'some' star.
In a couple of days in that current location begins new supernova. It lasts for a week-mounth.
Anyone who wish can travel close and observe it.
There even could be a special passenger missions.

Space structure allows to restrict the visual effects and not expand them on the whole galaxy (like the light from it needs time to come to the bubble).

There could be not only supernova.

Asteroid-asteroid/asteroid-planet impacts, comets, etc...

Due to rare character of such an events it not so hard to release patches sometimes in order to make galaxy show us it's events.

Actually, there's no proof it was ever a nova. http://www.constellation-guide.com/bubble-nebula-ngc-7635/

Jesus... My brain just imploded.

First off... to have an event happening at some "distant corner" of the Galaxy would break the rules established by Hard Sci-Fi and would therefore be omniscient in origin.

Second... Nova take about 1,000,000 (that's a million) years to happen. Not something that happens in a "couple of days". Although you would have to repeat it every bloody day for the event in order for everyone to see it. Again. See tyhe part where I said it would be breaking the establishment of hard (read: Believable) sci-fi within the game.

I might go for a comet or asteroid crash into a planet, but that would be RNG. And this game already has too much of that.

See what I said here if you have any questions.
