Sure, i like clicking that hot, sweaty mouse - But there is a but

This has to be adressed! I don't care about anything else. New Ships? Bah! A populated universe that makes sense? Bah! Just fix so that you might only need to click a minimum three times to enter the game instead of the tedious 6 or 7! Jesus, I thought this would be one of those things that postponed a release of a game. Seriously... figure this out now!

It is crappy design though. And it should never have happened.

The OP said nothing to imply that this was a top priority problem or that it should take anything away from dealing with other issues. As a software developer I even know how annoying it is to produce the first version of a really complex piece of software and then have everyone just talk about the flaws of the placeholder UI, but it doesn't mean that they aren't flaws and shouldn't eventually be fixed. And Frontier has a large development team – the person working on the launcher may not even have anything to do with ships, AI, background simulation, or such. (And if the launcher person is working on something else I trust they know their own priorities and don't just take them from a forum post.)

As for the importance of the launcher, it's the first thing a new player sees and sets some expectations for what comes afterwards. If the launcher feels clunky, they are prone to have a more negative first impression of the whole game after having been annoyed by the launcher first. (A friend of mine actually recently bought the game and their first post on social media about the game was complaining about the authentication mechanism in the launcher, so anyone who just glanced quickly at that post would have just seen ‘Elite: Dangerous’ together with what looks like a negative review.)

Life used to be so much easier, back in the day.

Turn on BBC Model B, click
Find Elite Cassette and insert into Bush Cassette Player, click
Type Chain "", click
Press play, click
Wait for the minutes of your life to tick away, errr, clickety-click
Load error, rinse and repeat, click (turns out that cassette was Kim Wilde from Top of the Pops)
Find proper cassette, click
Use pen to wind the crinkled tape back into the body, click
Insert cassette again, click
Type chain "" click
Wait ...time passes...click
Load new commander y/n, Y, click
Wait for an age...click
Finally. Mum calling up from downstairs, time for bed.
Reaches for power switch...click.

You could cut that down massively by typing CH. ;)
And thanks for reminding me about the Bush cassette recorder. Memories flooding back.,.,. :)

Aaaaargh ;)

I still prefer that to

Type ' Run "" [enter] '
Curse as pressing the dead-flesh style rubber keys caused the power cable to slip out of the back of the computer
Plus in the computer
Type ' Run "" [enter] '
Wait 10 minutes while listening to a carrier signal and watching garish flashing colours along the border while the game loaded of an audio tape
Get out the little plastic doohickey with an engraved plastic window in it
Hold said same up to the TV and squint
Guess the characters beneath it
Type them into the dead flesh style rubber keyboard, trying not to disconnect the power cord again.

You forgot the "rinse and repeat" after getting a "load error".

Is it possible to reduce the required clicks to get to where you play the game?

Click #1 The - Launch Launcher click
Click #2 The - Log In click

Click #7 The - Start Menu Open Play/Private Group/Solo click

:D

Yes, you can use a tool like Autoit to automate the mouse clicks and key presses. You could probably do it with Voice Attack too.
If I felt the need, I'd use autoit to start ED, VA and OBS but really it's not worth the effort.

Any problem with the game, or indeed any software, is a 1st world problem… After we're done feeling guilty about having the luxury of being able to have problems with the user interface of a game, we can still want it improved. =)

If a couple of clicks is too much effort than it would be better to just lay down on the couch with a beer in the hand and a cig in the corner of your mouth while watching a crappy tv show. Probably something with asses, idiocracy style.

It was a complaint disguised as a question...

Nope, it was a pure question and a description of the scenario
-launching Elite Dangerous on a pc :)

But surely you realize how it's being perceived as a complaint, right?

I understand that some have made that misinterpretation, yes
- But i wasn't complaining then and i am not complaining now either :p.

I was simply asking the forum members for tips in how to reduce some clicks - i never said "this must be fixed" or "f this game, launcher clicking ruined all my fun - im watching the boxed version burn right now"

One click launcher, two clicks max. Its 2015 and UI designers need to be told not to make people click through multiple layers uneccessarily? Really?

And maybe this is just a problem at my end, but the launcher acquires big chunks of red blocking stuff out when I do click. Argh.

Heh, still fighting that straw man? Neither I or the OP said that those clicks are “too much effort”, only that having fewer would be an improvement (no matter how insignificant compared to some other problems in the game or in the world)…
