Surely exploring is a one off thing?

Considering going off an exploring whilst I wait for new content and PP to be fixed. I've done trading and bounty hunting so mining or exploring are next.

My question is though surely once you have gone out exploring once and come back there's no point in doing it again? you've made money and scanned lots of things you cannot scan again? Elite in it's current state has no random spawns such as nebula, black holes, or anything apart from signal sources and those don't interest an explorer surely? why would I explore the same things again! maybe FD need to add things that randomly spawn that are worth exploring like ancient thargoids things or space anomalies... maybe you explorer vets can advise me?

There are several billions of systems you can fly to. There is no chance players will have time to explore them all in the nearest years even if everyone decided to give up all other trades in favour of exploring.

So, you'll definately find new stuff if you travel far enough from civilised space =)

I can only speak for myself, but exploring gets into your blood. No idea why.
I've been out on three exploration runs, the current one began in February and has taken me to the other side of the galaxy (and there are quite a few of us out here).
I honestly feel that when I've finally returned to civilised space and cashed in my data, it will be only a matter of days before I head out again.

I guess it becomes an obsession.

This. I have been back for two weeks and I am itching to get out again. No idea why, its predictable, I will search for the same things, the only variant will be the path I chose. I think there is some sort of virus in the nebuli, it infects you, making you go out again and again.

So you don't find it repetitive with just planets and stars to scan and no random objects or things floating in the void of space?

When I came back from NGC 7822 I tried to take up trading once more. After 2 days I thought 'I don't belong here!' On the 3rd day, I mothballed my T-7 and jumped into my good old Asp.

Now, I am out again, there, left of that blue star over there.

It's like the sea. When it calls you, you must obey... :)

I got my elite exploring and I miss it. Try to keep your ship undamaged for a few hour/day x weeks. Get huge amounts of exploration cr for your journey. And then try to avoid brown trousers when you are just about back and thinking of all the ways that effort could be taken from you.

Because the galaxy is really big, 400 billion star systems so probably well over 1 trillion celestial bodies. No one is ever going to scan all of them - in fact collectively we're not going to scan them all before the game servers get shut off at some point in the future.

I like the fact that it's procedurally generated, so even Frontier don't know what's in every system. Maybe there's a system with 50 stars, or a quaternary or quinary star. Or supernovae. Or something else.

My one concern is that many of the nebulae - which provide some sense of 'landscape' in the game - are identical copies. On another thread we found 4 identical, copy 'n' paste nebulae, and that for me really destroys the appeal of exploring, if all you see are exact copies of what you've seen before.

But what will really "make" exploring for me is planetary landings *if done right*. Planets with procedurally generated landscapes, minerals (and thus, colours), weather (and thus, erosion patterns), atmospheres (and thus, different coloured sky/clouds). I want to land and look up and see a crazy variety of skyscapes, planets, stars, rings, nebulae, and know I can fly to each one.

Again, just personal opinion.
I've done a 30k ly trip, lasting over 2 weeks, with roughly 1.200 systems visited.
That was back in january. I never felt the urge to do it again, even though exploration has been buffed since then and the route planning been made more explorer friendly.
All i'm gonna see is more of the same with slighly different numbers.
You'll only know once you've done it once, OP.
Your post makes me suspect you'll feel like me though.

Strangely no. Its that initial I wonder what i am going to find here thing. Honk, and then you see an earth like or a water, or a system just full of gas giants but no moons. Yes we need more stuff to look at and do, but as it is it does have a strange hold over you.
