Surface Detection

When flying over the surface of a body, is there an elevation that is best to maintain so that surface features are detected?
I'm use to being in the SRV, and running into procedurally generated objects, but they should also generate in the ship as well.

If you mean POIs that leave a blue circle on the Ship Scanner - those will be slightly visible anytime the Ship is >1.5km Altitude and fully visible >2.0km Altitude (AGL = Altitude Above Ground Level).

Just ensure the Scanner Range is set to maximum, otherwise it's easily possible to miss them.

Keep in mind, though, that several of the typical minor POI you can encounter in the SRV will not create a blue circle on the Ship Scanner and hence will not be detectable that way.
In order not to miss these, good old visual lookout is still required.

PS.
If you're looking for scoopable Cargo POIs, there an old trick that should still work if you want to locate it within a large blue POI circle on the Scanner (since the actual POI location is typically not in its center and must normally be located from the SRV) :
  • Equip a 1B Collector Limpet Controller (1400m Range)
  • Launch a Collector and lock it up as a Target from the Contacts Panel
  • descend with the deployed Collector Limpet to a lower Altitude within the blue circle (below 1km or less)

Should the Collector detect anything scoopable within its 1.4km Range, it'll start heading towards it immediately until it crashes right into it and expires.
Turn the Ship to follow the Collector Limpet - and you have your precise POI location.

THAT is the info I need! Thank you! I've been hovering at 2.0km, so I need to lower my altitude. That is good info about the limpets, had no idea that was a thing. Very helpful, thank you.

Additionally, if you have trouble spotting things visually, try flicking the nightvision on. Certain objects may appear slightly more distinctive against the background in that mode.
Yep, I'm drawn to craters, so chances are I'm running nightvision.

No stay 2klm or higher, when I was surface exploring I typically flew around 7klm up. Keep in mind that surface POI's that generate blue circles are also visible from glide, so you can cover a huge amount of ground gliding along with a 7 degree down pitch from around 30klm's up. Also keep in mind the surface scan range is fixed regardless of height so you will always scan the same area of ground regardless if you are 2klm or 20klm up.
