Sorry, I seen in OA's stream yesterday a suggestion for a compass for planetary landings...
There's already a compass for planetary landings and this is how you use it (until or if Fdev changes it)!
The heading indicator at the top center of your HUD is the compass.
It reads from 0-259° (clockwise):
0° = North
90° = East
180° = South
270° = West
Probably the reason the cardinal directions aren't really used is because naval & civilian vessels and aircraft don't use the cardinal directions very much (they use them but normally not when they are piloting their crafts). They mostly use the heading directions because it's a much more precise way of giving or relaying directions and tracking.
Telling one of you most important war vessels to head south could have them heading anywhere in that direction but telling them to head - bearing 192, is a more specific direction and can be tracked much better.
Modern Example:
"Red Leader, head bearing 323 for 13 mikes (miles), target is painted" - Precise
"Red Leader, head south for 13 mikes, target is painted" - can put you miles off target
However, for simplicity of this game, cardinal directions should be used. The average player isn't proficient in military customs and protocol.
