Surface Scan Missions - Do they require DSS?

As above, I took some of these and got no updates on entering the system, until I went in a ship with a Detailed Surface Scanner... it does not say this is required although it does indicate a SRV is required.

I had SRV both times.

Do you mean an Advanced Surface Scanner? This is what scans the planetary bodies in the system and indicates at which planet the mission is based.

As said, the alternative is to scan the Nav Beacon.

The Detailed Surface Scanner allows you to identify details about the planet, such as % metals, arsenic, etc, which doesn't have a function in these missions.

You either need an Advanced Discovery Scanner OR go to the Nav beacon and scan it. You do not need a DSS.

In fact, the only thing a DSS is good for is:
  • Earning you more money for a detailed scan of celestial objects
  • revealing the minerals (engineering mats) on planets/moons
  • revealing ring type (e.g. Ice, Rock, Metal Rich) and reserve status (e.g. Depleted, Common, Pristine)

Fun fact: If you pay for system information in the Galaxy map (for current/nearby star systems while docked at a station), or you get it from scanning a nav beacon, you only get the information you would get for a scan WITHOUT a DSS. Want to know what type of rings those are or what mats are on a planet? You'll have to equip a DSS and find out! Learned this the hard way.
