Surprised with Beluga

So I've seen a few "wha wha, beluga this and that" threads, but just after transfering max upgraded engineer mods onto her, and having her fully upgraded, I'm actually surprised how nimble and responsive a ship of her size is o_O

She's no Corvette, but with rank 5 dirty drives she feels better than a stock Python, which is damn impressive.

One thing I was not expecting is her lack of sliding, she stops and shifts pretty much on a whim, not a lot of ships can be proud of this tbh (looking at you Cutter, looking at you Asp Explorer even)

Weapon placement isn't bad either, and sure they are mediums, but OC IR do pack a punch.

All in all as an aged combat pilot, I can't help hiding my grin when I realize I'm effectively dog-fighting in a luxury liner :D

Oh and as someone mentioned she does burn on jumps if you equip shield boosters, however just turn them off during jumps and turn them back on when nearing your destination, very managable tbh

Agreed. I am very pleasantly surprised with the beluga. Properly outfitted it has no problem with swatting down pirates and is a lot of fun to fly.

I plan to get a Beluga anyway but.. if you get the best engineer mods possible it can contend with a stock Python, and if you turn stuff off it won't melt?

The shields are made of paper and its a flying inferno. Those are the biggest issues.

Get Prismatic Shields with resistance upgrade, 3 shield boosters with resistance, and 2 with strenght increase, suddenly no damage taken

Loved the Beluga in the beta. I had five seeker missiles and a fighter launch and was able to see off most pirates. I also didn't have too much difficulty with overheating apart from when I overcharged the power plant to grade 3 or more.

With a grade 5 FSD boost, I was able to get my fully cabin-laden and weapons-laden Beluga to do a very respectable 30 LY. Makes a surprisingly good exploration ship. Not on a level with an Asp or Conda, but pretty damn fine.

Saying the Beluga is good with engineering mods is like saying insects don't taste bad after you dip them in chocolate. You shouldn't need to engineer a ship nor spend 4 Weeks in Power Play to make it an attractive option.

Yes, with engineering and powerplay kit you can shoehorn it into a combat role. But consider this - the bits for level 4 or 5 FSD boost aren't hard to come by, and both are available from starting engineers. The lightweight life support mod is a bit harder, but it can be done.

The Beluga is for taking absolute mountains of pax and cargo long distances in comfort and safety. It can match the T9 in space trucking and come close to the Anaconda in exploration (but the Conda is 50% as expensive again and more). In pax shifting, there is no equal because the best paying and most interesting pax missions require luxury cabins.

How is it that a cruise ship that should handle like a big boat actually flies and responds better than the cutter? The other big ships drift and glide all over the place as you might expect from ships of that size, so enters the Beluga liner, a luxury passenger ship, largest vessel in the game to date and the handling with just stock material is infinitely better than that of all the other large ships. Something feels wonky here .....

Shush! FD will nerf the handling if too many people like it! 😀

It's actually quite simple, it's balanced out by having weak weapon slots / modules

Lol, everyone talking about its fighting abilities,,, thought it was a passenger ship.

Shame because of the modular way things work in ED and Frontiers lack of desire to make ships that are single role that this can happen imho...
