Surround sound from laptop

My plan is to hook the HDMI output from my laptop up to a projector. Sadly, that leaves only the mic output (stereo) to feed into the surround system - there's no audio pass-through out of the projector. :( Does anyone have any good ideas for how to get surround sound out to the amp while the HDMI (video-only) still goes to the projector?

I'm wondering if I should get something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/StarTech-com-USB-Stereo-Audio-Adapter-External-Sound-Card-with-SPDIF-Digital-/111277593925?_trksid=p2054897.l4275 - but will Elite Dangerous support it? And more to the point, will ED output 5.1 surround?

I'd get an external sound card (works via a USB port). There's plenty out there.

Hi. Could you be more specific? What sound card are you using and do you get 5.1 surround out of ED using it?

I had a look at the Panlong HDMI audio extractor and I can see the usual US -> UK exchange rate working as well as ever; it's $35 including shipping if you're in the US. To buy that in the UK you're looking at over $83. I think I'll pass, thanks... :(
