Surround Sound is Awesome!

So I finally got around to connecting my gaming PC up to my home cinema system, and, wow! Just wow!

I'm absolutely blown away! There's a whole other level of sound and immersion to the game once you get it into 5.1 Dolby surround. I'm currently out at Jaques flying an Anaconda, and it seriously feels like I'm flying a biiiggg ship with those sound effects. I can't wait to get back to the bubble to check out how the other ships sound!

I seriously recommend setting this up for any Commanders who have the kit. And if you don't have the kit, buy it ;)

Well, played FD, well played. Give my congratulations to the sound team on a job more than well done :)

Yea I've got some turtle beach for my xbox. With Dolby surround sound. I think there's 6 speakers on each side so it helps me in dogfights as I can tell where a ship is in my vicinity without using my sensor screen. Sometimes I have to turn it down. But yes the people on the audio team are doing a stellar job. Now go and listen to a barnacle site on full blast.

I use 4.1 on my computer. Has always worked well for games.

Turn the music off too for the best experience.

Good headphones > surround sound.

Headphones can't compete if they are only stereo, you have to have multiple speakers in each ear to really work.

Even then, a decent speaker setup is going to give you much better environmental positioning as the sound is physically coming from different directions which is picked up through your head.

I use 7.1 surround sound - on board s/card is native and the headphones are Razer Tiamat (7.1)

Yes - 100% agree - the sound is knock out.

I just bought a used 2.1 from some guy I met in a parking lot, work better then my built-in speakers, so I'm happy lol

I would protest that surround sound headphones don't actually have multiple speakers in the actual headphone itself. At least certainly not turtle beaches. Most of it uses some sort of DSP and its definitely artificial sounding. The good news is that Elite Dangerous compared to other games actually sounds half decent with a dolby's simulated surround turned on, simply because the engines of all ships sound more prominent when spatial audio is enhanced. I use Astro A40's with optional cushy sound blocking ear-cups (so I can run my air conditioner in the room without being annoyed) and have enjoyed it with surround sound enabled. I can't say that for most games though, which I keep in stereo mode.

If you're not really needing a mic and don't have background noise, I don't think i'd even recommend most people get gaming headphones at all. Pick up some open back audiophile headphones, preferably ones with a bass punch to them and just plug them into your audio jack. No other special equipment. You'll get a much more natural sound stage and the game will sound amazing, stereo and all. Some good brands to check out would be Phillips Fidelio, Sennheiser HD, Audiotechnica, HIFIMAN and i'm sure there are countless others.

5.1 speakers are a great way to play too, but it's just not feasible for myself.
