Newcomer / Intro Surviving in station boost...

Returned from the coalsack nebula with a fair bit of data.
Headed straight for Lave to get some rares before I do the off again.

First time I've ever done it but I come through the letter box and hit boost by mistake. Watching the far wall scream towards me all I can think about is all my data going up in smoke.
Like a mad man I turn FA off and nose up so the bottom of my ship hits first...

Crash.. Scraaaape.. Hold tight..

Ended up with 1% hull left. Not sure if my gear was down but very pleased I hit belly first. Pretty sure it would have been game over nose first.

You should also put 4 pips to shields. I have this mapped to a hat switch on my throttle under my index finger so I can change energy distribution withoutnhaving to think about it or look for keys.

Bravo. It's fun to boost out, there's something quite Millennium Falcon-y about it, but it's only mildly less dangerous than boosting in. This is why I resist the temptation to have my landing gear off while I'm exiting/entering the station, no accidental boosting.

You can also de-map the boost button while docking (and change some other flight characteristics). Not sure when this kicks in, as soon as you have docking permission, inside the station, or for take off only.

Hah, nice, GJ. I can remember when I started playing last week I kept seeing comments popping up about how docking could be the most dangerous aspect of the game, particularly with beginners. I seemed to take to it quite well though (probably all that time spent on X3 Reunion) so laughed those comments off, particularly as when I did hit a wall it didn't seem to do much damage in my Sidey or Adder.

Then I misaligned an exit and boosted into the wall with my new shiny Cobra. With no shields. Full cargo. No insurance.....

That was a tough lesson :D

I almost became a splotchmark on the far wall once but this was the Viper's maiden flight and "Weee, this thing is fast!"
Boost is mapped exclusively to the joystick and it's the only non-combat related button I can press. The top one right to the
hat switch. (Extreme 3D Pro). There's no accidental pressing of that one.

My maiden flight in a Cobra had a very similar outcome :)

I was a lot more careful on my Asp's maiden voyage! ;)

I hope you mean the cargo scoop. (Says the guy who didn't know he had one until recently.) I'd rather not have any stars that activate the fuel scoop in my station. :)

Em, yeah, one of those...

I'm an idiot.

Landing gear would work too but there's a bit of a delay with it lowering before it slows you down. I don't think there's a delay with the cargo scoop, although I have to admit I haven't tested this theory...

Hang on. So when I said I'd pay you back the cargo you lent me and you said you didn't have a cargo scoop you weren't just being nice? ROFL.

So sorry I didn't point it out to you. I thought you knew.

Heh. First thing that went through my head when I found out was 'boy, Minkey must have thought I'm crazy.' I was really hoping you'd forgotten that. :)
